Exporting Master

Just getting back to Sonar (from Sonar 2.2 way back) so I've recently purchased Pro.  Ongoing current project (one song) has about a dozen audio tracks.  Up to now for export I've been selecting the tracks I wanted and exporting to MP3 (for email-able versions).  No problems.  However recently I've begun adding some mastering effects to the Master Bus and I can't figure how to export output the results from that bus.

Glad to dig this out of documentation if someone would be kind enough to point the way.

Thanks,
John Payne

Its probably a problem with the Export settings.
Next time take note on your export settings to include buses.
Are you selecting "What you hear" as a preset in the export settings ?

And are you using the File/Export/Audio option or are you doing an in project bounce ?

In export settings, under Source Category, select buses and under Source Busses make sure only Master is selected and obviously make sure everything you want in the exported is routed to the master bus.

Thanks for quick reply.  Here's what I'm doing:
    Not selecting any tracks,
    File: Export
    Bounce Settings: HW Out
    Type:MP3
    Preset: What you hear
All boxes are checked except Audible Bounce and Live Input
    MP3 Options are 128bit, stereo, Quality 2.

When I just Export after selecting all the tracks with these same MP3 settings the computer crunches for about 30 seconds.  When I Export with these settings but don't select any tracks it crunches for hours.

35mm - I've now done as you suggest.  Sonar says Mixing down audio, but it's taking a very large amount of time - at this point I'd say will take a couple of hours which doesn't seem right for a 4 minute 12 audio track file.  When I select all the tracks it exports in less than one minute.

Ahhh - big clue.  I let the mix-down complete (4 hours), and the resultant file is good, but very very large.  The first portion (maybe 1%) contains the audio, which sounds fine.  The rest is silence.  So now I need to figure what I may have done that makes SONAR think the input file is so large.

There must be something, an automation node, tempo change or similar WAY down the timeline in order for this to happen.

Ctrl + End should take you to where SONAR thinks the end of the project is.

    You have a few options:

    • Hit Ctrl + a then swipe across the timeline to select the actual range you want exported
    • From the end of the project, swipe backwards in the timeline to highlight the dead space and use the Ripple Edit feature to remove it permanently
    • Identify the events causing this and delete them

Yes -- now that I look closely I see that some tracks have volume automation lines that run very far out.  How do I kill them?

Also ... did the "Cntl a" as you suggested to select the tracks and length and export worked just fine.  Took about 30 seconds to export.

Best way, open up the automation lanes for each track. Then you can easily see the erroneously placed nodes. I think you right click to delete an individual node. Once you have have dotted lines the envelope is clean

Trimmed the automation lines/tracks, but Export (without setting the range with Cntl A) takes forever.  Still something in this file that extends it way out in time.

To remove everything after the "end"
    • Select All
    • Move Now to where the end should be
    • Select From Now
    • Delete

scook -when I did as you suggested it appeared like a darkend area from the end of the music to way out there indeed was deleted.  But still have same problem.

That was happening to me and I realized that I had some very long tracks with little info that went way beyond the song ending.  As soon as I truncated the various tracks to the song end, the problem was solved.

If you cannot find and remove the data causing the project to play past the "end" the only way I know to prevent generating a large time consuming export is:
    • select all the tracks to export
    • select the time range to export
    • export the selection

John, I find it's best to get into a habit of preparing for export by first selecting all the tracks and selecting the length on the timeline that I want to export + plus some extra that can later be removed when mastering. Then I always select master as the source. Doing these things ensures that I get what I was expecting to get.
