Waves Abbey Road Vinyl for $29; redundant with Waves Abbey Road j-37 Tape?

Hi... was wondering if some of the forum crew here with more smarts on all-things-analog-emulation can answer a question:

Abbey Road Vinyl is on sale today only at 29 bucks, down from regular price of $249. Heckuva deal it seems. But, I already have the Abbey Road J-37 Tape plugin and the AR Redd plugin. It seems Vinyl and J-37 (and to a degree the Redd console emulation) are mainly about adding analog characteristics, which I love. (I've been carting my Peachtree crates of vinyl around the country for years. Can't seem to let go!)

Does it make any sense at all to have all of these Abbey Road emulations, if they essentially do the same thing, which is add analog warmth/character?

Thanks for your thoughts!
Billy

Vinyl does very different things from what the other AR tape / console plugins do. Nothing else I've tried sounds quite like it.

Whether you'll like what it does is another question. Time for a quick demo!

I have both. The Vinyl plug-in especially when you turn on the TG desk. I think J37 is pretty darn great....

Used it to get a wonky modulated tape effect on some strings for a project I was working on. The Vinyl to me at the moment is a bit gimmicky especially the vinyl slow-down. Also it's not as intuitive as J37 when it comes to setting up things I think.

I have both and as Eddie says they both do something different. The slow down feature of ARV is a blast to play with. Haven't come up with a use for it yet, but it's fun as all get out to play with!

I would say they are not redundant. But like Eddie suggests, might be time for a demo!

Thanks for the replies! I guess at $26 (found an extra 10% off coupon online), hard to go wrong with the Waves Abbey Road plugs! I'm in...

Vinyl is certainly different. I had been bugging Waves for years to create Waves Vinyl (just scroll back through their Facebook history to see). They did that and then some--superseded my expectations!! What I needed, personally was a plug-in that could accurately emulate how a Master or pre-master would generally be expected to sound on vinyl. Some of the attributes I wanted were:
  • Needle placement
  • different cartridges
  • different speeds
If you're a vinyl fan, you know that as a needle moves toward the inside of the record drastically increases in distortion. Although this is sometimes pleasant. You can emulate that with this plug-in, something not available with others.

Even though they didn't include the function of speed, you can place the needle on the outer area of the record to get a better idea of 45 RPM, and the most inner area for 33.3 RPM. It's also been really good for things like guitars and vocals.

No, these are not redundant, although there may be some factors, such as wow and flutter you might find overlapping. These are completely different plug-ins and modeling efforts.

Vinyl is a lot of fun! I used it on a shaker with a shaker preset (go figure) and it did some nice things to it...

My current track I uploaded to Soundcloud uses quite a lot of J37 tape and a Vinyl on the mixdown. I automated the tonearm and added a touch of phase distortion. A subtle effect to make it even more lo-fi I hoped. Basing it on a 15 minute per side vinyl.

So I have used it. Still got to love Izotope Vinyl too though...

This is just a past time for me and I suck at music, so I try not to take it too seriously.
