Suggestions on a PC upgrade with Sonar Platinum

Sup Every1,

I've been using Sonar Platinum on my 2011 Sony Vaio and it just doesn't cut it anymore. Too many audio dropouts and too much delay when I want to record and hear myself through the headphones at the same time. It seriously messes me up when I try to record because i'm hearing things from like a half second before and its so distracting. I have basically been recording without the playback in my headphones. Time to fix this problem! Here is what I currently use:

Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (1st gen)
DAW: Sonar Platinum (Cakewalk)
Mic: Neumann TLM 103

I make underground hip-hop with my friend from Russia he makes all the beats and I do all the lyrics/vocals. I won't be doing anything but vocals on this for the most part, possibly i may lay down an electric guitar track VERY infrequently, but 99.5% of the time I just want to have vocals sound clear and no delay in real-time recording. I want my voice through playback to sound like it would when you record at a studio or close to it. I can't stand this delay. My current computer has been doing a lot of stuff like photoshop and other graphic design programs, and a bunch of other stuff.

I want to get a new laptop to only do music on. I'm trying to keep it under $1000 but if its a little overt I guess i can live with it. But what would get me the specs i want for the lowest price??? Any suggestions?

Would this one be any good? -->

If it is the Sony VAIO S VPCSA290X that has an 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-2410M.
Which is not that bad. you could upgrade the RAM and add 4 more gigs (it only has 4 but max is 8GB)

You might be having an issue with your interface not being set up properly.
Are you using the ASIO driver downloaded from Focusrite ?
What you are describing (echo a 1/2 second late) sure sound like latency to me.
It could be just a matter of the driver needs to be installed and you need to set Sonar to use that driver.

But if your heart is set on buying a new pc, get a desktop. they are more powerful for the money, more room to add on, and they don't get as hot so run better. an intel I7 is the way to go. I personally have built every DAW I use and I built this last one for under 600.00 usa dollars.

they are not hard to build at all. you just need to be aware of what parts go with what parts (Mobo/CPU match ups, RAM, EXC).

That gear should be more than enough to record a single vocal track while playing a backing track. If you care to you I'm sure you could tweak it to get it running good.

Well. the thing is this computer is getting kinda old and really slow. More frequently I am getting the blue screen of death. I could keep this one around to beat up on, go on the internet with, and so forth. I have used ASIO and I've messed around with latency a bunch of times and I just can't get it to sound right. I want to get a new PC only to do music on and maybe put photoshop and some of my Adobe graphic design stuff but nothing more. If I have to also get a new interface then so be it but i need to get rid of this issue. I used the latency moniter and its always telling me my computer just isn't moving fast enough.

Oh they removed my links.

my pc is a Sony VAIO VPCEH25FM

the computer i was looking at is an ASUS-K501UX 16GB (Refurbished)

It has 3 USB 3 ports. Your 1st Gen Focusrite Scarlett has USB 2 only.
So your interface will essentially be a good size paper weight.
you are paying through the nose for that graphics card (The Geforce gtx 950m). You don't need a gaming graphics card for Digital audio.
It also has only 2 logical cores per physical. which isn't the greatest ( I have 4/8).
Remember your going to pay more for a laptop than you would a desktop (value for the money) and if something breaks, your all done. where as a desktop you can easily open it up and interchange parts within seconds.

With all that said, if your only over dubbing a few vocal tracks, this will be fine.
Not my first choice, but it will do the job. Just take caution with Referbished computers.
I've never had any luck with them and my thought is, its refurbished for a reason, either someone didn't want it or it was a display model being drooled on in a Walmart . Sorry I know I might seem harsh but im trying to be as honest as I can to help you out. I don't want to see you get ripped off.

Yea after I wrote that post I started looking at desktops instead. I think I will go with a desktop. Which ones would you suggest? You're not being harsh. It helps me more than anything else!

Re: Suggestions on a PC upgrade with Sonar Platinum 2017/07/23 19:02:55 (permalink)
Should I invest in a PC/Mac that supports Thunderbolt connection and upgrade my interface? That will be pricier but I really can't stand these latency/slow computer problems. is there a better way to get the same or quite similar effect? I'm not very knowledgeable about home recording and equipment- what I do know is just basic stuff.

I will get a desktop. And perhaps a new interface. the Scarlett Clarett looks super nice but its quite pricey. The Scarlett 2i4 looks pretty good too though. Not as good as the Clarett but it says that they have upgraded it to be super low latency. How low that is I don't know but right now when I record and use playback to hear myself in real-time i am hearing it as the syllable before. I don't know if that is 1/2 second, maybe it's a 1/4 second but it's super annoying and distracting!

@Chuckebaby throw me some feedback, criticism, whatever helps me learn and get something with the best bang for my buck! I trust your judgement!

No problem. Whenever you have the time I'd be happy to hear your ideas. Thanks for the warm welcome. I should be using this forum more often because I'm sure I have other questions just about using Sonar Platinum. Looking forward to getting these kinks worked out and making more music! I like Cakewalk DAW's I just need to learn them better

It looks like a lot of people favor Mac computers for audio recording, but there are also some that say PC is the way to go. I have never used a Mac, but if it gets me what I want in recording I will gladly use one. Lots of people recommend going to craigslist and that you can usually find something for a lot less than amazon or Best Buy. I will have to weigh my options some more.

Looks like a Mac is out of the question since you can't run Sonar Platinum on anything but windows. I've been reading up on home recording and desktops. Looking at many different desktops: Dell, Acer, Lavono, CybortronPC, etc. From what I've read it would be good to have a quad core processor at least 2GHz speed. 8-16GB.

I looked on Craigslist and there is a guy who makes custom gaming PC's and sells them for a decent price. Maybe I'll give him a call. Still trying to figure this out.

If you live in the US, and can stretch the budget a little more..
Perhaps check out http://studiocat.com/opencart2/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=56
That would give you a pro audio pc, ready to go right out of the gate.
He's a SONAR user, and has a good reputation here (probably elsewhere as well)

Looks pretty sweet. Maybe some years from now but I don't plan on spending that much yet. I just want enough to take care of my latency/delay problem. Thanks for the link though I appreciate the advice and I will definitely remember about those!

Someone a town over from me makes custom gaming computers I saw his ads on craigslist so I'm gonna give him a call and see how much he knows about building for audio.

If you can see my signature, I have no issues running +50 tracks projects on it.
That would come to well under half the price of the one mentioned above.

I'm not sure I understand what computer that is exactly. Is that something you custom built? Those are the parts you put in it. I'm not as computer savvy as you guys haha! Today I was looking at a Dell Inspiron and an ASUS M32CD-B14 Desktop - 7th Gen Intel® Core i7-7700 processor, 3.6 GHz, 12 GB RAM. Re: Suggestions on a PC upgrade with Sonar Platinum 2017/07/26 03:55:37 (permalink)
I almost went out and bought a Dell Inspiron 3668 12 GB today. But then when I was leaving to go buy it. I turned around. I figured I will get a new interface first. Maybe this is a problem with the interface. I've been reading that the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has been giving a lot of people this delay/latency problem. Mine is a 1st generation so I'm thinking it might have been updated to a 2nd generation for a reason. I figure I'll look into interfaces and buy that first. If I still can't fix the problem then I can do the PC. I want a new computer at some point anyway but I just don't know if I need anything crazy as long as I can get the delay to stop.

I did some researching and looking around and I ended up getting the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD. It was pretty cheap and has a lot of good reviews and in particular it was this trait:

Zero-Latency Monitering

"The UMC202HD mix control allows zero-latency direct monitoring, which means musicians can experience their performance clearly “ with no delay or lag in the returning signal, resulting in a better performance and recording. A powerful phones output has its own level control and Monitor A/B source select for DJ-style cueing. Free audio recording, editing and podcasting software, plus 150 instrument and effects plug-ins are included"

So, we'll see how that works out first...

Sorry! I should have clarified. It is a custom build pc.
I thought more about the specs being good enough for me, so they might do it for you.
I built / bought mine to a (low as possible) budget.

One thing to be aware of is most off the shelf PC's use somewhat inferior components as they're built/sold for general day to day consumer usage (not for pro audio usage)......you may get lucky and get a good/stable machine, but there's a bit of risk with getting one off the shelf.

It's actually not that hard at all to build your own system (just take a look at some Youtube videos) as you'll have complete control in what goes in your machine (hardware & software) while avoiding all the bloatware that comes in off the shelf machines.

If you're inclined to do it, there's a lot of very knowledgeable people in here that will help you out (i.e. Chuckebaby)....it's also more rewarding when you do build it yourself.

Best of luck!!

There are a few places that will sell you the barebones PC parts and then assemble the kit and burn-in for you.  Or you can have parts only shipped only if you wish.  You can get a PC with case, power supply, CPU, RAM, drives, etc., but without an installed OS, and take it from there.

Barebones options are good for first timers, because you don't have to worry about part selection as much.  But you still have a bit of control.  Here is one place that sells them.  This is just an example, not a recommendation.

Warranty: Assembled and tested (1 year parts, lifetime labor).

Lifetime tech support: Customers who purchased a custom built product from AVADirect are entitled to free technical hardware-related support for the lifetime of their product.

You can use the second generation 2i2 drivers with the first generation interface. These drivers will give you much, much lower latency if your PC is fast enough. On my Dell laptop, with i5-6440HQ I can get below 6ms, if I remember correctly (I'm on holiday in Italy).

Download the second generation drivers from Focusrite before doing anything else. They will work with your first generation interface (just don't select 192kHz). It is just that Focusrite doesn't want to publicise the fact for fear of jeopardising upgrade sales.

On the subject of a replacement PC, I recommend Dell Outlet. I managed to get a Dell Mobile Workstation M3510 with quad core i5-6440hq, 256GB M2 SSD, 16GB Ram, large battery, W10 Pro, nice full HD display, backlit keyboard, lots of ports, dedicated graphics for £568+VAT. Not the prettiest but great build quality, solid as a rock and eats whatever I throw at it. I've since added a 256GB M2 drive in the modem slot and replaced the SSD with a 512GB NVME. If you keep looking, you can get very high powered machines at good prices.

Re: Suggestions on a PC upgrade with Sonar Platinum 2017/07/27 16:50:37 (permalink)
I ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 580 desktop for $80 off a guy on craigslist yesterday. I figure it just gives me something for now to only do music on until I can build my own computer. Keep in mind I'm only doing vocal tracks over hip-hop beats.

The specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5 650 / 3.2 GHz
RAM: GB / 8 GB
Capacity: 1 TB

Not bad for now. Between this and the new interface or installing the 2nd generation software on my Scarlett 2i2 it should be able to take care of the delay. Still setting it up though so I haven't tested it out yet...

That should work fine.  Dual core at 3.2 Ghz is probably all you need for now.

You could probably pull that CPU and sell it for $100.

The good thing about Dell is that they put their service manuals on their website, and keep driver downloads available for years.  Handy if you wipe and reinstall the OS.

Or in a year you could probably sell the whole thing and get your $80 back!

DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

I don't know why nobody has mentioned this but your Focusrite Scarlett also has direct monitoring for zero latency. This prevents you from using reverb from Sonar during tracking (unless you can stand the reverb having a delay) but your dry sound will have no discernable latency at all. This has nothing to do with your computer speed.

Please do elaborate. I have the UMC U-PHORIA hooked up and I'm still getting the delay a little bit. It seems like its a reverb that is on way too high causing the delay. That would make sense. But How do I turn this off? I'm in the preferences. What are the specific things I need to change?

Seems like I got the Latency problem under control. The Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD kicks ass- an awesome interface by the way if anyone's thinking of getting a new one get that one!
