Who here started with tape?

I did.

I started with a 2 track reel-to-reel.  I upgraded to a 4-track. Then a Tascam 8 track cassette with integrated mixer.  Then an ADAT. Then another and another (24 channels of ADAT+ BRC) driven by a 24*2*8 mackie analog console (as long as a battleship!).  At some point, I think the BRC provided sync to Cakewalk or vice versa when Cake was MIDI.

I started retiring the ADATs as Cakewalk Pro Audio became a more viable option (slowly at first).  I think my ADATs are now snapper reefs somewhere.

I wonder how many folks out here are so young they never saw tape?

My first system was a Tascam 688. I had a 486DX4 100mhz with 1 mb of ram. I had it synced with Cakewalk 1.0 for Windows 3.1 using a board that had 2 sets of MIDI IO and SMPTE. I don't know if I ever fully mastered that 688.

Tape? We scratched cave walls with a sharp stick!

OK, I'm not THAT old. First tape recorder was a little 1/4" R-R, using the microphone that came with it. I'd set the mic on a pillow on a chair out front of the band. That was c. 1965. I didn't get a proper deck until 1975 - a 15 ips TEAC 3340S plus a 7.5 ips Pioneer R-R to mix down to. Of course, everything ultimately ended up on cassette. So yeah, there was some tape involved, for sure.

Cakewalk 1.0 (1986?) was basically a way to save tracks and reduce the number of bounces.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

First system was the 4 track Tascam in the mid 80s. In the late 80s/early 90s I got the 8 track Tascam cassette and used a synch tap with it to hook into my 80/86 desktop which powered my dos midi software called cakewalk version 1 if I recall. It controlled my Roland d110 rack module and my alesis dm4 drum rack module. Think i was using an ADA guitar preamp for the guitars. Then sold it late 90s cause I saw the direction we were heading too. 2004 went full digital and used a bunch of effect racks to add reverb n stuff. Had/have the line 6 pro racks for guitar n bass and upgraded my drums to the Alesis dm5. 2016 ditched all racks and using virtual drums, virtual keyboards and simulators for guitars.

My first system was a Fostex 8 track recording onto hard disc.

I then invested in a 2nd machine and slaved them together using Midi Machine Code to sync them up.

The largest size of disc that the Fostex OS would handle was 4.3Gb

CbB, Platinum, 64 bit throughout
Custom built i7 3930, 32Gb RAM, 2 x 1Tb Internal HDD, 1 x 1TB system SSD (Win 7), 1 x 500Gb system SSD (Win 10), 2 x 1Tb External HDD's, Dual boot Win 7 & Win 10 64 Bit, Saffire Pro 26, ISA One, Adam P11A,

Fostex 4 track cassette here. I used one track to sync pre and early MIDI Roland sequencers.

I had an interesting evening in the early 70s visiting Dartington School of Arts music department watching massive tape loops strung around microphone stands, the then bleeding edge of sonic experimentation.

Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

I started on a VestaFire 4 (I believe it was called), in the 90's.
In the end, only 3 of the 4 tracks worked.. Even then it was fun

Good day all,
I'm  with bit on this. Started on a small cassette doing 'radio show' type recordings. Then moved to a Sony machine that had sound on sound capabilities.. lol....couldn't  afford  the 3340, so had to settle with a 4 track Dokorder. (Bet you barely remember those machies). In the late sixties I  started fooling around with recording string parts on a cassette, and then trying to sync them up to play a chord. The first Melotron (can't  even remember the spelling). It was almost impossible to sync them together to play a chord. Maybe I should have  kept at it. I wouldn't  have been this poor. Lol. I waited and waited for years for the computer to be able to do any of the things that we can now do. Sometimes we forget how far we've  come and still complain about the slightest thing. Been with Cake since 2000 signed up in 2004 for the forum. "And away we go". (Sorry for the steal. Hehe).......love me some cake........

In the Mid 80's I had a rack mount 4 track cassette recorder I picked up while working at Manny's ..(I  forgot the brand )
Also had a nice amount  of choice studio gear in rack mount form . ( working there did have it's benefits )
Heck even my guitar rig for live playing was all rack mounted w a custom computer control center for recalling effects chains..
Plus , I always played out of 3 guitar amps .

BS alert ...because this is what it felt like ...I only used one cab

For gigs I would hail a Taxi put half my stuff in it , have him wait for me to hail another Taxi then I would hop in the second cab w the other half of my stuff and tell the  2nd driver to follow the first cab

I Got to love the 80's  ...my poor aching back

Sold all that stuff off in the early 90's moved out West and eventually got a 4 track Yamaha ...
Somewhere around 2000'ish I went digital and bought a brand new Roland BR1180CD ..I love it and then switched over to PC and got a hold of Cakewalks Home Studio 2  in 2005 ...

FWIW, I prefer having a rig with a small footprint ...Mac and PC lap tops over here ...if I need to get a tape sound
I can bring my stuff to a studio and do it there ...I haven't yet ...no bucks for that ..just excuses

all the best,

Kenny

Much experimentation with 4-track recorders in the late 80's and early 90's. I hated hiss. Eventually turned my attention to sampling and using a tracker program in the early 90's.

I had a friend back then who would record "multitrack" songs by putting sticky tape over the erase head of a cassette deck and building them up track by track. He even used to add "samples" from vinyl by connecting his turntable up and recording it direct onto tape. Talk about dedicated.

My first was a Teac 3340S

combined with a Teac 3300S.

I would record 4 tracks then mix down to 2 tracks then move the tape back to the 4 track
and record 2 more tracks, repeat mix down and move getting up to sometimes 12 tracks per song.

I then moved to an Otari 1/2" 8 track

and then a Tascam DA38

Got some cool results with all 3 rigs but so glad it's evolved digital.
Would never go back.

First Multi Track: TASCAM Portastudio 424
2nd Generation: 2 Alesis Black Face ADATS with a 16 bit Sonorus StudI/O that allowed me to bring the resulting recordings into the PC.  I could record 16 tracks live...The rig was big and heavy.
3rd Generation: Mackie 1640 with firewire (Live 16 channel recording and analogue mixer)
4th Generation: Presonus Firepod (Original version factory repaired) - 8 channels
5th Generation (Current Rig) the Behringer XR18: Now I can do 18 channels and I just bring a 6U rack on wheels!

ZarggI started on a VestaFire 4 (I believe it was called), in the 90's.

My god, that was my first 4 track. Bought it in 1985 with my Tax refund (400 bucks). It had no panning. Tracks 1+2 were left and right, tracks 3+4 were in stereo.

Im not sure where to start though when it comes to tape. I still use it now. My first real production piece was a Sony 2 track reel. then I bought a 4 track, a Sansui. Went through the years upgrading and had great results on an 8 track cassette (even though it was only 1/8 tape) in the mid 90's but that all changed when I bought a Tascam Studio 8. An 8 track reel which I still use now. Maxell tape is hard to find but I found new rolls on Ebay around 6 years ago (25 of of them) and bought them all at 3 bucks a roll.

Tascam still sells parts for the Studio 8 ( I bought 3 extra belts) but it is a tough machine to maintain. Something always seems to going bonky on it.I mix down to the Studio 8 using 2 tracks per L/R. Sonically it is giving me something I believe my mixes were missing. I love digital and I love its ease of use. What used to take me all night "Splicing drum parts" now takes around 20 minutes using a DAW.

But the straight digital sound is not as masking as Tape was. I find Tape does an outstanding job at blending things and masking mistakes in a mix. Digital is the cold hard truth and tells no lies, it is very clear and sonically perfect, almost too perfect for my taste.

This machine below is mine and used yesterday. Its my secret weapon.

I started with a PortaTwo 4-track, for really really bad demos.
Went straight from that to a fantastic Studer 2" tape machine in a studio.  What a leap....  The singer in my band was co-owner of the studio, so we did 3 full albums and lots of demos in there.
When i left the band, I went to a 12-track digital portable thing.  Then discovered Cakewalk.
I love SPlat, but still miss tape.

Tape? Oh, yeah!

I started with two no-name cassette decks c. 1968, then moved up to a Craig r+r with sound on sound in 1970.  Then came a Teac 3340in the early '80's (with 15 ips no less!), then I added an Akai 4 track r+r to do all sort of nifty bouncing/mixdown tricks!  In 1984 I stepped up to a Fostex A-8 (which I still have), then finally made the switch to digital about 15 years ago.  These days everybody is chasing the "warm" analog sound.  Personally, I was glad to get away from it.

Fun thread btw.

I started with the Teac 4 track, but only 7.5 ips.  Cassettes were the only mixdown I could afford.  Then I got a revox 2 track (1/4 track @ 15ips).  Then a Tascam 38.

Band days - TEAC reel to reel thingummy doo daa - don't know the details as I was never much interested in that side of things back then. It was all just pushing buttons, twisting knobs and sliding slidey things whilst making no discernable difference to the sound to me. These days I have read many things, listened to many experts and spent many hours trying to educate myself in the dark arts of audio mixing and I have now learnt to use a computer mouse and some software to make no discernable difference to the sound.

I still have this bad boy because I still haven't convinced myself that I won't ever find a use for it again

In 1970, my brother Mike and I received identical Philips cassette recorders for Christmas. We would record ourselves on one and then play it back while playing along and recording on the other one. When our dad let us use his Grundig R to R, things got real exciting. Sounded like &%$@ but it was fun.
While in the Air Force in 1979, I purchased a TEAC A-3440 and spent many happy moments in my dorm room recording. Dream Girl on my soundclick site is one of those songs.
In the mid-eighties, Mike and I recorded several songs on his Fostex 4-track recorder (which can be heard on my soundclick site), The Fields Brothers Band.
Around 2000, I wanted to start recording again and bought myself a TASCAM 4-track Portastudio, which I never used much because my brother the programmer convinced me to try computer recording. I got Cakewalk Music Creator 2003, which came with a MIDI to gameport cable and the tape machine got put in the closet except for special needs.
Like recording Anna Young singing "no, I gotta go" in her grandma's living room on the song New Year's Day, or recording Carla Cook in the conference room at work during lunch hour singing "lost" for the BGV in Lost In You.
Recorded about 15 minutes of rainfall on it and am still waiting for a project to emerge that I can use it in.

I am selling my MIM Fender Stratocaster HSS, red and black. PM for more details.

Music Creator 2003, MC Pro 24, SONAR Home Studio 6 XL, SONAR  X3e, CbB, Focusrite Saffire, not enough space.
Everything is better with pie.

When I was a kid I had 2 x Philips 3" reel to reels that I would record and overdub with.
Then my parents got a Grundig 3 in one Radio, Record Player and tape deck. The deck allowed Sound on Sound recording and was very advanced for its time. Then finally I got my own Teac 3340 which I kept until I got an Akai MG1212 recorder in about 1986.

Love affair with Amiga computers started around then and so began my digital phase, which continues to this day. That's 30+ years of digital and 20 years of analog tape before that.
