Behringer X-Touch MINI is a great Sonar controller now

almeister deserves credit for the idea and testing, I was just "clicking on screen"

If you are looking for a good, small, cheap and completely integrated with Sonar controller, there is one!
Instructions and downloads

* all major parameters for one strip (volume, pan, gain, mute, solo, echo, etc.) are directly accessible, no values "jumping" or "catching" (thanks to encoders) and everything with actual status (LEDs and rings)
* jogging, zooming and quick strip focusing are also there, without pressing the "next track" button 10 times, accurate mouse gestures to find measure and keeping one hand over computer keyboard for shortcuts
* set or move to loop and punch points without moving the hand away from the transport
* quick adjust up to 4 sends, with direct access and indication for all related parameters
* One strip is nice, but in case you want quick balance several strips, you are only one button press away from the multi-strip mode. And I use the word "strip" because both modes are working for tacks and buses.
* if you also use mouse or computer keyboard, MINI will follow current focus, the device and the Track Inspector in Sonar will stay in sync!
* do you have plug-ins? No problem for MINI! You can adjust up to 16 continuous and 16 switches in any plug-in, including FX Bin, Soft.Synth and ProChannel modules. And do not worry, with a bit of patience, Dynamic Plug-in Parameters Mapping is working not worse then solutions from other companies.
* do you want adjust something "just a little bit"? You can! Encoders provide 2 different resolutions for continuous parameters.
* so many parameters and just several hardware controls... No, you do not need to remember everything! Build-in display can show you current layout. And you can "tune" that window for your taste (size, font, colors and position).
* everything is optimized for one or two hands operations.
* do you hate the last take? Press Record again and redo it quick. Stop-Undo-Record is there.
* 3 command buttons are already configured for 6 common functions like undo and multi-dock.

If something you like to do from the controller is not in the list, there is one unassigned push-encoder (in the single strip layer). Your ideas are welcome!

Looks really good, i'm seriously considering getting one of these.....
I'm guessing the fader on the midi isn't motorized?
Don't think this is a deal breaker for me, I think the multi strip view will be what i'm looking for most...

Any recommendations on where to buy in UK? Gear4Music looks like they  are cheapest at the moment....

The fader is "simple".

Multi-strip layer on MINI is limited by the number of controls. If you really need multi-strip operations for something more then quick volume/pan adjustment, Compact and Big X-Touchs are much more comfortable (but there is no AZ Controller presets for them yet, I mean these "big brothers" for the moment have less functionality in Sonar then Mini...).

Thanks, sounds like a great solution....
I don't have the budget or space for a larger device, so I think this looks like a good option for me.

I have bought from Gear4Music before ((my old Lexicon IO42), shipping to Norway included, as the cheapest I could find anywhere as one of them), and I had no issues dealing with them.
Just wanted to give a positive feedback, as perhaps a reassurance before using them.
All the best.

Cudo's to  azslow3 and almeisterfor doing this for the SONAR community!
Great work

PS.
I was just checking it (for fun), to see what it would cost me to ship it to Norway.
Between 67, and 83 $..
I might have to get it elsewhere. Great price, though

Thanks for the feedback - yes always frustrating looking at US prices for most of these devices....
None of the UK retailers seem to have it in stock - has this been 'released' in the UK yet?

And just for the record, the Kudos really deserve to go to azslow3 for his knowledge, expertise, and time. I was just the "test subject"

Just wanted to say thank you to azslow3 for doing this stuff. Looked at all sorts of different controllers and was actually thinking I would have to pay upwards of 1000 USD to get what I want/need. But after reading about teh features and thinking about my ACTUAL needs, and not just the fact that I want another sexy piece of gear, I came to the conclusion this more toylike device most likely does what I need. The tine footprint also works well in my setup as I can simply use in on top of my VPC1 without having to change anything.

Anyway, thanks again for doing thi stuff for the rest of us bums! :)

Thank  you for nice words :)

I also think small device sits better on VPC. I have tried to put StudioMix on my CN... it does not fit and looks ugly. I do not have Mini, so I put VS20 instead.

Note that in case you use only 1 pedal for performance, 2 left pedals can be used as a controller:
* Sonar by itself support "MIDI keyboard shortcut", with "Shift". So if you learn one pedal as this "Shift", you have 88 assignable buttons.
* with AZ Controller, it is possible to do even more fancy things with pedals...

I will play around with it a bit to try it out when I get it later this week and I might ask you a question or two after that. :)
The pedal info was interesting, the VCP1 has 3 pedals and 99% of the time only use 1 (sustain) so if the others can be used for other things that might be really cool!

"MIDI shortcuts" are described in https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=Templates_KeyBindings.4.html
There is no "MIDI Learn", but you can check which messages are sent recording short clips or in AZ Controller without any configuration.
But the left pedal is 67, middle 66 and I guess you know key names

Unlike with "Remote control", when "Shift" pedal is pressed, keys are not sent to the track. And with "Enable" checkbox you can quickly disable the feature to use the pedal normal way. I mean that is well done feature.

It's good value for the money. I had one a few years back, but sold it as I didn't gel with it. I disliked the "clunkyness" of the rotary pots, not smooth enough for my taste. Didn't have any problems with it, and it seemed like a robust piece of equipment.

Can't believe I used this program for so long without doing this.  Oh well, live and learn I guess :)
The item was out of stock so will have to wait for another week before I can play with it. In the mean time I will play around with using the keys on teh VPC1 to trigger some actions. Thanks for the tip! :)

Yea, I dont expect a premium feel on this considering the price, it looks ( and might feel ) like a toy. But I believe I can get the features and functionality I need from it with azslow3's presets. It is more of a workflow thing for me than using it for mixing and heavy use of knobs for finetuning etc, so I hope it will tick those boxes. We shall see. Good thing is that if it is not a fit it wont break the bank :)

I can not change physical filling of encoders, but I can control the resolution with which they control parameters. The preset already support coarse (default) and fine (with "shift") resolutions and both can be easily tuned for personal taste.

I got a question already :)  Could a button on the x-touch take the role as "shift" instead of a pedal to enable using the VPC keyboard to trigger shortcuts in the same way as if using the pedal? Just curious. I really like the idea of having all 88 keys available for shortcuts, alreadystarted thinking about which ones etc :)

Yes, that will work (just tested). But you loose one complete button on Mini... And each button does many nice things

One small warning. I have written the implementation is "perfect" is Sonar. I forgot one bug. You can only switch modes after you release all keys, otherwise you get "hanging" notes.
(I have just implemented the whole idea in another DAW, but without this bug)

Hi azslow3, just got teh device home and hoocked it up. Just played with it for an hour or so but man, why the hell did I not get something like this years ago?!  It works just like you said and I can tell it will do wonders for my workflow AND fits perfectly on my VPC1 without the need to stands etc.  I will play with it and might come back with questions but for now I love it :)

Great stuff, thanks!
