play/stop delay

Hi all i have a curious minor but annoying problem....
i have updated my daw and with Sonar is a beast....ok.
when i work with a 20/30 tracks project with pro channel on and some eq and comp 3rd part plugs, kontakt with 2/3 instr, i have a 3/4 seconds delay when i press stop button.
Sonar freeze for that time.
cpu is very low (i7 7h generation)
The problems disappered with fx off but in the previous daw was all ok...
i have tried to uncheck "streaming from fx"in the preferences tab but nothing...
any thought?

Many thanks in advance

How old is your Hard drive ?
Sometimes when a HD is on its way to death it will slow down but continue to work.
It might be worth running a test on it.

Are you running the latest drivers for your soundcard ?
Sometimes issues like this can be traced back to how fast the soundcard is interacting with Sonar.

That delay is a function of buffer sizes and sample rate. Playback won't begin until the buffer is full, so the larger the buffer the longer the delay.

What Bitflipper said. Plus some effects introduce lag especially if they have a look ahead feature such as limiters for example. So it's very likely you have a plugin that has introduced a bit of lag.

That's something different, I think. Are you saying that it takes 3/4 of second after hitting the spacebar for playback to stop, or that playback stops but SONAR is unresponsive for 3/4 of a second?

If the former, it could be the "Play Effect Tails After Stopping" option (FlushOnStop in aud.ini). This tells SONAR to keep processing pending data until the output buffers are empty. If you're using large buffers, that could easily account for 1/2 to 3/4 seconds of extra audio.

Don't know if this is the case but I have noticed that during long mixing sessions, that this issue and many more start occuring.  My theory is that the UNDO buffer is getting really big because for some reason when I do a SAVE, it improves these types of performance issues.

If it gets really bad, I just quit SONAR and restart and reload the project and all is well.

Don't know if this is the case here but I have found this behavior has been around for years and I am just used to it and the fix.

A 128-sample buffer wouldn't account for 3/4 of a second. Something else is causing the unresponsiveness, but I have no idea what it might be, as I've never observed it.

I have, however, experienced keypresses not having any effect, e.g. hitting "W" to rewind. That has always turned out to be a focus issue, e.g. a plugin's UI has focus and "W" means something special to it.

Anything like this (channels in Saffire Pro 26):

Note: The Allow Arm Changes During Playback/Record option is disabled by default. When enabled, SONAR must keep all hardware input ports open so that it can dynamically arm tracks on the fly. With some drivers in WDM mode, this can add significant overhead if there are many input devices enabled in Edit > Preferences > Audio - Devices. This may lead to more frequent drop outs. When using this option in WDM mode, it is recommended that you disable all unused input drivers in Edit > Preferences > Audio - Devices to minimize this overhead. Disabling unused inputs is not required when using ASIO mode. (from help)
