Of course, we should note that EQ-matching only works if the modified sound contains all the frequencies that were in the original reference, since EQ can only manipulate their relative levels, not generate new frequencies. Fortunately, with distorted guitar that's usually the case because of the way the harmonics are created.
 
In fact, distorted guitar is one of the few instances where EQ-matching actually has a chance of working well. Unfortunately, plugin vendors market the technique for everything from microphone emulation to matching full mixes to commercial references, only to frustrate new users who can't figure out why their mixes still don't sound like their references.
