Noob Alert: Help with setup and configuration of inputs and outputs

Hi,

Firstly, if this is the most common question ever then please accept my apologies, but after an hour of reading I didn't find an answer, so apologies in advance.

I'm using Sonar Platinum along with a midi keyboard, scarlet 2i2 (which runs the monitors) and a Boss GT-001. The plan was to connect everything up via midi and record using a vst, the GT-001 and eventually a Roland vdrum module.

I've managed to get a vst midi keys track working by adding both a midi and audio track via the insert soft synth menu and out thru the monitors by selecting the focusright scarlet 2i2 in the audio > devices > output drivers. By default sonar then only lets me select the 2i2 as the input. So when I want to record in a similar midi and audio track combination with a guitar using the GT-001, unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't output thru the 2i2 because I need to use the GT-001 as the input, which makes the output default to the GT-001 also.

I did read around asio4all and briefly tried that but it except for initially, it didn't pick up the 2i2 therefore i still couldn't use it.

I just wondered if I'm doing something really silly, or in fact it just can't be done. I'm presuming then adding a vdrum to the mix just adds to the problem?

Anyway, any advice is really appreciated.

The ASIO specification permits the host (SONAR) to use one I/O driver at a time. This means when running in ASIO Mode (Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording), you may only use the Focusrite 2i2 or the Boss GT-001 for BOTH audio input and output. ASIO4All may work. This is because it is not a true ASIO driver, it is a wrapper for WDM drivers. IOW, ASIO4All will use both devices WDN drivers and present them to SONAR as a single ASIO driver. This is similar to running SONAR in WDM Mode and selecting the input and outputs of the two devices. There may be issues with either approach though. Pretty sure the best results are had using the Focusrite ASIO driver and 2i2 as the only audio interface.

Following from what Scook pointed out, simply connect your FX unit to the inputs of the Focusrite with standard jack-jack audio cables.

Thank you scook. Much appreciated. Asio4all just isn't working for me with the 2i2 so will maybe have a play with WDM but yes, coming to the conclusion you are right. But thanks for taking the time :)

Thanks Sanderxpander. Yeah, I thought about that, but I was trying to keep the midi data along with the track. Still, it sounds like the most logical solution. Not wholly sure why I want midi guitar to be honest! Must stop geeking out trying to connect everything to everything.

Hi. Do not use ASIO4ALL with your 2i2. Use Focusrite's ASIO drivers.

All the best.
Edit: Didn't read Scook's answer before writing this.

I was trying to keep the midi data along with the track.

MIDI is a separate device setting and has nothing to do with ASIO. Are you sure it is unavailable even though the audio driver is not selected? There may be a timing issue but could be nudged into place.
