Now, I play the strings. I can play the piano really badly and I'm aware of keys, pitch ranges, breath requirements and fingering parameters of other instruments. I know these things but I can't play the instruments so this knowledge is part and parcel of looking at a score. I can look at a dozen notes on a bass staff and say, "There is no way a bassoonist could play that." Looking at a matrix or PRV view I'd have to visualize these views in their notation form and I have no experience with these views. I need to see the notation.
This thread is marked as solved, though it appears Cakewalk's Staff View is still in need of a solution.
Your comment here about the need to "visualize" the notation is bang on. I've been forced to use PRV to do my composition / midi inputting . . . but I always have to go back and look at the result in Staff View for it to make sense, that's how I roll. The statistics are known to show that only a small fraction of users roll this way.
Staff View is always a keyboard shortcut away from PRV, so that works well for my own workflow. If Staff View stopped working that way, I would certainly have to find another program to compose in, even though Cakewalk is the only DAW I have ever used.
It's been pointed out many times here that the majority of users aren't going to use the Staff View for the kind of music they are writing. It's also been pointed out that Cakewalk would do well to enhance the Staff medium to increase sales in the educational market.
Would I prefer to input and edit midi data directly in the Staff View ? Yes, but I must add that I've never seen it described here how that would be accomplished. I've never seen a clear plan about how it could be any different than it already is, other than adding an actual notation rewire add on, or some kind of notation plugin. I've seen requests for improvements and bug fixes, and even a recent thread suggesting the code is too old to be tinkered with, or even some legal limitations about altering the old code, and even a recent tease about something being unofficially discussed about Staff enhancements. With so much talk, why no action ?
