definitely a serial port, no longer used no doubt due to a serial killer

Yeesh. How old are the systems where you work. And yes... 9 pin serial port. It was essentially the "jack of all trades" connection before USB became a thing (mice, printers, data transfer, breakout boxes, etc). However it may be a proprietary connector that is just disguising itself as a serial port. Sometimes manufacturers will wire up the 9 pins in funky ways to do a specific task. It does have what I THINK (IIRC) the standard serial port symbol above it. They may have been added to the machines simply to be able to hook up older equipment if need be.

Yup but as I said sometimes manus will use those old 9 pinners in different wiring configs. I have been unsuccessfully prowling the intertoobs to see if I could find the symbol but am not having much luck. I am almost CERTAIN I've seen that symbol before back when I was slaving away in the electronics surplus mines. So for now I'm just gonna assume it's a custom daughter board meant to hook up to a break out box or other doodad.

Thanks all for the expert identifying I was rather hoping it was an older style monitor connection of some description.

Beeps, our work PCs are sooo old they only have VGA connectors. Except mine... it has a DVi and a VGA However, the DVi out doesn't work so I'm stuck with using only one monitor - hence my hope that the 'unknown' slot was some kind of monitor out.

I still have some gear that would use that port. I have to use one of these instead.

57Gregy Maybe a game port?
Those were typically 15 pins. This is a 9 pin serial port.
