RIP Cassini
NASA intentionally hurled the Cassini probe into Saturn thus burning it up in its atmosphere to prevent a possible uncontrolled crash elsewhere once it ran out of fuel. Specifically into the potentially life supporting moons because they were worried about earth borne microbes contaminating any possible life already existing on said moons. http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/cassini-saturn-contaminate-moons-enceladus-titan-1.4287818 Casual and not so casual space dorks everywhere salute you!

RIP Cassini. And a belated Happy Birthday to Voyager 1. Launched 40 years ago on 9/5/77 and still going. https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/ I would have posted this earlier but didn't know there were any space geeks here. :)

I'm probably not smart/educated enough to qualify as a roight proper space geek but that don't mean I can't sit back in awe at the wonders of our strange and complex universe nor laud the efforts of those who've dedicated their existence to unlocking its mysteries. Also... space junk is cool to look at. Saturn is a particularly beautiful blob of space weirdness. Seems almost cosmically poetic that it has proven to be the most likely to have life floating around it... and in our OWN solar system. When they started realizing and reporting that... well I think that was one of the biggest scientific revelations of my generation. Of course the general vapidity of modern society barely registered it as a blip on their internal radar. *le sigh*

I'd imagine they are now trying to figure out a way to send a sterile landing vehicle. For now it's all about Europa (Jupiter). https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=6847

I was amazed by one piece of knowledge shared in a recent Cassini-document: The rings of Saturn are the most even/level surface known (!). They're only a few feet thick (don't remember how thick exactly), but the width equals the distance between earth and moon. The scientists talked about Cassini and Hubble-telescope with similar tones as dog-owners talk about their pets :o) That was sort of cute.

Hi, I would like to see the composites of the pictures from the last hour ... if they made it. I'm assuming that the lens/eye of a camera probably died before the transmitting equipment, which may suggest that in the last hour or two we might just have mish-mash stuff that is not decipherable, but I sure would like to see the pictures they can put together from the last bits of information.
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

IIRC Saturn doesn't have a defined surface on which to run. Things just get smooshier and squishier until you get compressed into a much smaller thing than you started out as (or perhaps turned into a fine mist to become part of the atmosphere itself). :-)

This is a cool sentence regarding its structure! Sounds like a good description for a heavy metal band, ya? Saturn's interior is probably composed of a core of iron–nickel and rock (silicon and oxygen compounds). This core is surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen, an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium, and finally outside the Frenkel line a gaseous outer layer.
