Field of Eternity (with apologies to Ant Phillips)

This is a simplified arrangement of a hauntingly beautiful and deceptively difficult instrumental piece for solo classical guitar by Anthony Phillips (ex Genesis) from an album called Private Parts & Pieces he recorded as a solo artist back in 1978. Even in this simplified form I struggle to do it justice - so try not to be too harsh in your comments - I know I hit a bum bass A instead of an E halfway through and completely failed to nail the harmonics at the end but therein lie the joys of one-take recording.

The correct version has far more detail and colour and should be fretted much higher up the neck with some extremely vexing left-hand finger positions. I'm slowly trying to master that version but - until then - this...

This is a charming piece.  I can't help but think what a nice Christmas song this would make.

You should listen to the full piece - it really is beautiful - there's a guy did a version on YouTube that is very good. I did manage to get the dots for it so it's another one on my to do list.

One of my favorite all-time tunes, and one that proves that simple pieces are sometimes among the best. Phillips has done much tougher pieces but never one more beautiful. Not crazy about the straight to the board sound, but you did a nice job with the tune.

PS, I don't know why Ant's music doesn't get played by more musicians.

I agree Ant's music is deserving of a much wider acclaim and coverage, although one reason might be that many of his pieces are pretty complex. I would rate this as up there in terms of difficulty when played as per the score, as opposed to my rather simplistic homage.

Thanks for listening and the feedback, interesting comment on the sound. It's played via the Taylor ES2 into a Focusrite 2i4 and recorded straight into Sonar with a slight reverb effect via a Toontrack EzMix preset for acoustic guitar. I really struggle to get a decent acoustic finger-picked sound when recording - perhaps I should mic it instead.

It really needs a nylon strung guitar to do it justice, you simply cannot achieve that effect with steel strings.

I had a 314ce too Andy. Mine had the first generation Expression System. It wasn't bad really but would have sounded better with an internal mini mic. I swapped a guy even up awhile back for his Godin Grand Concert Duet Ambiance. It has a couple of internal piezo sources and its under saddle piezo goes through an internal Fishman Aura. You won't believe how much it sounds like a mic'ed guitar. (I hope to post a video I did with it here before long.) Also, They have a steel string Doyle Dykes model coming out soon. There are a couple of poorly recorded samples of it on YouTube, but there's an excellent recording of it on Doyle's FB page. Sounds incredible: https://www.facebook.com/...osts/10154952048773200

Wow that's quite some finger picking going on there. I'm going to try a mic next time to see how it sounds but somehow don't think my one and only vocal mic (SM58) is the right tool for the job.

This is like capturing one of those intimate concert moments when the lights dim and the spotlight focuses on the musician, the crowd is hushed in expectation. This certainly delivers and is really well recorded for a one take, you should be proud of your efforts.
