Ugh... me and my old bandmates were crazy people.

So... the reason I've been significantly less helpful/coherant around here as of late is because after BBZ released "Evil Is In the Hand of the Beholder" I pretty much wanted to put every minute of DAW time/thinking energy into FINALLY producing my old band's, like 12 years overdue, punk album.

I had already done a round of time correction on ALL the tracks (two takes of 8 full songs) but I was still learning about/experimenting with time correction. The results were good but I KNEW I could do it much better/more thoughtfully/less obtrusively/etc with a second go at it (especially after months and months of jamming out over the original results to get used to the songs again).

Most of the songs have whacked out tempo changes and other chaos going on that makes things tricky but all went rather quickly thanks to having already done them and keeping elaborate notes at the time.

However I am now down to the two last songs and they are just the WORST (but perhaps coolest) tunes for crazy tempo changes/swells/crazy fills.

Anhoo... it's all coming together nicely but for a bunch of essentially musically illiterate street kids we sure pulled some obnoxiously complex stuff out of our butts.

No. This is now the beginning of the end of my official "reset" of the production... and absolutely the most laborious/time intensive/boooooooring.

Just a whole pile of monotonous tempo mapping, then splitting, then punching in numbers from my notes (and adjusting anything wonked from my first mapping adventure) and listening back (like every few moves, with and without Click, adjusting, tweking and twirling twirling ever twirling!!!).

BUT... once I get through these last two songs (and I'm halfway through the second take of the second last tune) then my attention completely shifts back into semi normal musician/production mode.

Sort of. My next step is going to be to edit together the best takes of the two sets of tracks... well the best takes of the drums and vocals because I am overdubbing everything else.

In some cases I may even have to mix and match (which I want to avoid due to potential phasing issues). For example one drum part is mangled on one take/set of clips but okay on the other BUT there is a clip in the vocals.

I would do edit surgery on that section to try to edit out the clip on the vocals (replacing it with the vox from the take with the bad drums) but keep the switch as short as possible.

You know what I mean.... go full on on this bugger and make sure I've got the best of the best of the two takes.

Once I've got a good, proper edit then I pick up the axe (and bass) again and do what I do ALL of this tomnerdery for.

Spazzing the heck out on my shiny string thingies!!!

I think I might just start again. Is the rest of the band still alive?

Ya, but we dun got wicked old.

This is the time period these tunes need to be heard from and honestly trying to play it to a click would just screw up the vibe. Correcting it afterward seems to be the way to go instead of chaining the artists to a click. Also in the first session I "overcorrected" things. Like trying to get in and tweak fills/individual hits. This time I keeping it looser and letting the original tracks breathe much more. It's much better.

Also if we were to get back together it would be to write a new album... and I think they'd agree.

Why are you correcting tempos?  You said it's punk!

Indeed but I also need to do overdubs and since neither set of takes was tracked to any kind of click (and there is tons of drift) editing between the two takes would be impossible unless I did this.

However... I do intend to do a remix of the original beds (the whole band) as maybe a special limited release type of thing.

Meh. My entire pea is dedicated to getting a "studio" quality album out of this bugger for now though.

@Mike...

Howdy.

Eh, the sad part is I don't think I could ever post the end results here. It's just too abrasive/political (it is punk after all... I didn't write the lyrics though... lol).

What I am hoping to do is take everything I've learned/experimented with and put together some vids about it (maybe using some of the less sweary/obnoxious toons but I have other band material I intend to treat in this manner).

Difficulty: I've been doing my time correction in Reaper. It's just easier than in SONAR (although the Bakers seem to have fixed a few things that were causing problems... haven't tested them yet) but then I import the corrected/rendered waves into a new SONAR project (or template) and use my (manually typed into notepad) tempo map notes from the Reaper Correction and create a duplicate tempo map in SONAR (which wraps itself around the waves if I didn't screw anything up).

Then I'm back home in SONAR and can work as I normally do... which is where I'll do the comping/editing/tracking/mixing/etc.

Basically I am trying to create the bed tracks that never came into existence (and never could again) from our pre-prod off the floor test.

This experiment/learning curve has been about five years or so in the making and I am JUUUUST now comfortable with my skills to take the final stab at it.

Once it's done... i'mma gunna go crayzy with the proverbial cheezwiz

C'mon, we're all big boys now, let us hear it when it's done. Plenty of stuff gets posted at Songs with lyrics that are outside the TOS.

Well I was planning on sending a few folks around here a private copy once it's done (or nearing completion and I need some extra ears on it). Mayhaps I'll add you to the list?

I think you'd appreciate it for what it is.... although probably not exactly your type of tunage.

Think Motorhead + Slayer + Dead Kennedy's + DRI + Plasmatics.

It's a pretty nutty style which is why when I first heard a crappy off the board recording of their first show I insisted they let me play guitar. Ultra fast spazzout music.
