Some people take months or even years to finish tracks. Others record and mix a whole track in an afternoon.

kick . . . snare etc, I wouldn't be doing the drum kit pieces individually if that is what you are getting at, they would all have their own tracks, but all done at the same time whether played live, programmed, using midi loops etc.

For my XG MIDI 16 track MIDi sequences, that's how I do it. However, I do have a standard template that sets up the tracks with the right controllers. The patches I chose depends on the track I am sequencing.

Hi. I do it one by one, except for as mentioned above drums. I either play them myself, or use MIDI loops as starting points. It can be a time consuming process, but a process of love/passion. It can take from hours to years to finish. All the best.

I do it track by track as well. All my Drums are on separate channels (Kick on 1, Snare on 2, Hi hat on 3, exc). This makes setting levels and adding FX to each drum kit piece easier than if you had 1 midi track triggering a soft synth drum kit. There's only so much you can do inside of Addictive drums. But when you split the kit up, you can use pro channel and good FX for each kit piece. Once you set it up you then make yourself a project template. this way it is available for recall at any time.

Yes, properly creating music (or art) can take a long time. The record I'm currently mixing took 6 years to properly arrange and record! But when it's done I will confidently be able to say "this is exactly what I wanted to release" with no excuses. A friend of mine recently recorded a "live off the floor" album in a day. Recorded, mixed, mastered, all in about 16 hours. His band was tight, and he wanted that raw feel. Part of me wishes my project felt right in that manner, but mine is layered and I performed 90% of the instruments. So it took what it took. If you rush it, it will almost never sound "complete." This stuff takes what it takes.

Although I have completed a song in one day, that's an exception. Usually it takes a week or so, and in some cases I haven't called it "done" until literally years after a project was begun. I guess that's why it's called a "project".
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

It depends on what you want to do with Sonar. If you just want your guitar and vocals, you're running at your own pace. Remember, lots of great albums took forever to make. U2's "Where the streets had no name" took months to edit and mix, apparently. Bryan Eno nearly erased the tapes to get a fresh start! Kate Bush is notorious for spending years on an album.

Very true. And we're talking about professional artists recording in top notch studios with world class equipment and mixed by the best in the business. So if you're aiming for that sort of quality, be prepared to spend a LOT of time dealing with the minutiae of a project as well as maintaining focus on the bigger picture.

But when talking about finishing a project, completely, mixed and mastered, is not the same as what the OP is asking about laying down tracks. I can lay down 12 tracks in an afternoon, depending on if I'm still writing the parts or already know what I'm going to play for each instrument. It's the post production mixing and mastering that takes days or weeks. I think that's an important distinction when answering musaed's question (which I believe was asking about laying down separate tracks). And for those who are laying down separate tracks for each drum piece, I'd highly suggest getting Superior Drummer 3. All the individual drum parts can be mixed within SD3, along with efx. Thus freeing up your Sonar tracks to where you only have to create one track for the drums. *just my 2 cents on that issue

You don't need SD3 for that, most have inbuilt mixers, some have limited options as far as FX, others not so, you can do it in BFD3 (which has more FX available than SD3),SD2, AD2, Ezd2 and on and on. Personally I still prefer individual tracks for kit pieces and overheads, room, ambient etc, ability to use other 3rd part plugs you may have etc, just more options and control. ( I have SD3, but much prefer BFD3 still)

For me, I have many songs in different stages of development. I can't stop writing! lol so I put down a scratch track and take it as far as I can and then work on something else that is in the works. I may work on 3 songs a day. I'm always working on songs even when I'm sleeping. I'll wake up in the night and write words in the dark. ha! I'm just saying, :) The more ways you understand how people work the better you can find your own way... Peace!
