New P5 User with OS / Hardware Issue

I have just purchased P5 v. 1.5 and started to use this. I have now noticed a problem in XP and am not sure if anyone has seen something like this. As I exit the program it reboots the PC. I have a M-Audio Radium controller. I also have Home Studio and Kinetic. All the Cakewalk products are exhibiting the same behavior. I have XP sp2 with 3.2 GHz Intel Prescott. 1GB of DDR2 Ram, and the new Audigy 4 pro sound card. The error from Microsoft is very undetailed. Generic problem with device. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hey H,

    Welcome to the forum!

My first thought is that the problem may be in the device driver for your audio device(s). The Cakewalk applications are all quite stable, however, they rely heavily on the audio driver software which links pretty tightly into Windows. Driver issues can cause severe problems.

My first suggestion is to make sure that all audio devices are running the latest available drivers. Try updating to the latest, try re-installing drivers, try rolling back to an earlier driver. Any of these may help you uncover the root of the problem.

I am running Sonar 4 Pro version and P5 1.5 on a computer running XP Pro and its very stable, no symptoms like yours....
Well that is Sonar 4 had a problem making me reinstall it but that seems to have been fixed with the latests update release.

My Cubase and FL Studio works perfect. Only Cakewalk programs cause the reboot. The Audigy line of sound card do not allow "their drivers" to roll back. If I tried to use an Audigy 2 driver like Cakewalk Tech Support suggested; it checks the hardware and says you can not because you do not have an Audigy 2. Creative Tech support says that the software that was delivered with the card is working and they can not assist on any other software. So this brings me back to where I started. I have the latest BIOS and have tried some obscure things like changing the memory hole size and PCI settings. Still same results. Everything on the computer is working seemlessly; but I can not fully use any Cakewalk program with out the "dreaded reboot" at either exit or at the first import or other function. Creative has no drivers newer than December 2004 on their web site and this being a new model has not had recent driver updates out. Any other ides are greatly appreciated.

Well, given the information you have I'd say its time to contact Cakewalk's technical support via telephone directly to get their help. They know more than anyone else what pieces of their software might be most likely to conflict with your setup.

I agree with the others that it's undoubtedly SC drivers.

I was having this problem with the Tascam US-122. I've upgraded to the FW1814, on Sunday was it? Yeah. and have had no shutdown issues in the several days since. Statistically it would have happened several times in that amount of time.

There are about a thousand threads on the board (do a search on 'Audigy') centering on problems with Creative sound cards and their drivers. I think we're running into unspoken rule that high-end consumer and low-end prosumer sound cards are a shot in the dark with pro audio software. They may work with some, be buggy with others, and choke entirely on a few.

For starters, I've heard a lot of nasty things about the Windows XP Service Pack 2. Or have you been using SP2 all along? Or did you install it after installing Cakewalk?
Another thing is your Audigy setup. I agree with the previous poster (agin)... Creative sound cards seem to be far more tempermental than the cards of most other manufacturers.

If I had to make an off the cuff guess, I'd suggest removing everything Cakewalk, then put the computer thru it's paces for a day or two. Then re-install the Cakewalk stuff and see what happens. If the problem re-appears, then there's something in your system that Cakewalk simply isn't going to get along with. I know that sounds stupid, but a lot of times, two pieces of hardware and/or software just aren't gonna get along on the same system; no matter what you do.

And one final thing... don't go messing in the BIOS unless you know what you're doing. No offense dude, but that kind of blind tweaking can cause more problems than the one you currently have.

    Good luck.

It is a sad day when a company won't try and go the extra mile for the customer. Let me tell you what the L at SB should have told you.

    A. Goto the device manager and disable your sound card driver.
    B. Open project 5 and look at audio settings. Chances are they are set for 44.1khz. Leave it there for a moment.
    C. Goto the Audio HQ and change sample rate to 44.1
    D. Reenable your sound card driver in device manager.
    E. Goto adio settings in P5 and change selected audio card to the audigy card.
    F. Now close and reopen and repeat steps and change to 48khz
    G. In Audio HQ reset sample rate to 48khz.

    This should do the trick.

    Have fun.

Thank you soooo much 'Instant recall' your post on how to get audigy cards to work in P5 did the trick for me.
