'Rock School'..ah, the '80s...

I'd forgotten all about this early '80s show, 'Rock School'. Quite bizarre really, and they couldn't have found more stilted, embarrassed presenters if they tried.

Vince Clark from Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure at about 7 mins in..what a horrible, cold looking studio he had.

Never saw the show, I was working in Holland at the time, but I had a book they put out. It had some useful tips if I recall correctly. I will have to look for it next time I am in the loft.

I remember this program being shown on our local PBS station back around that time period. I recorded the episodes because I thought they were done quite well. It may seem dated and elementary today but at the time it was informative and entertaining. I probably still have them on VHS but I seem to recall missing one episode because the PBS station decided to show that one episode at a different time. And unfortunately they never replayed it.

I also recall one episode where they discussed amplification for reggae bass players, where you either use two amps or two channels, with one channel providing the note definition (i.e., using treble/mid) and the second signal flow being mostly the low-end sound range. Kind of like a sub-woofer. I always thought that would be worth experimenting with if I were a bass player.

Did a little search on Deirdre Cartwright, she's a very accomplished musician by all accounts. She was in an all female band called Painted Lady who later became Girlschool. Somewhat wooden TV presenter though

Jeepers! I was 23... Never kept a diary so there's no way of remembering what on earth I was up to really

I know that, by that time, I was in a 2 year relationship with the lady I eventually married and am still married to now.

I'm trying to think what albums I'd have bought that year and I'm stumped... Who released what in '83?

I have a good memory, and it was 5 years before I got married Well, let's see, looking at the albums released that year I think I would have bought;

Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
Robert Plant - Principle of Moments
Freur - Doot Doot
Ian Anderson - Walk Into Light
Bryan Adams - Cuts Like a Knife
Genesis - Genesis (The Mama album)
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Robert Palmer - Pride
ZZ Top - Eliminator
Big Country - The Crossing
Level 42 - Standing in The Light
Japan - Oil on Canvas
Paul Young - No Parlez
SRV - Texas Flood
Peter Gabriel - Plays Live
Herbie Hancock - Future Shock
China Crisis - Working With Fire & Steel
The Fixx - Reach The Beach

Plus a few others I would have thought.

83, twas a good year for me. Went to work in Holland in June. Within I few months had seen Dire Straits, Supertramp and Golden Earing. Met lots of tall blonds and generally had a great time.

Just found the Rockschool book and had a quick flip through. Its pretty good for what it is with some useful stuff in its 190 pages. I might actually revisit some of the Riff development exercises.

'83: Made the college football team as a punter, didn't get any of the classes I wanted so I ended up crashing some calculus classes and dropped off the team.  Turned out they took last that season and the punter was sacked ten times!  *Whew!*
