Is it possible to automating Variations For Volume And Velocity Or other Track Properties

Reading Craig Anderton's tip on getting realistic Drum performance I am wondering if there is a way to do the following.

Let's say I play a snare by hand for the entire song, then I quantized the snare so that it is 100% aligned to the grid with perfect timing. Now I want to select the track and perform some kind of automation or editing which will put every 4th bar off by a few points or in more advance scenario, randomized the off-set so that the sound appear unpredictable.

Also do the same for Velocity and Volume, where random hits have different velocity or volume, the difference could be 0.1.

Most recently, I had to do a song using this technic but it was like getting a root canel, because I had to randomly select notes to put off key or adjust velocity. Then I broke the percussion into small parts so that I could add reverb to every 3 note. It worked beautifully but was a lot of time.

Long story short, is there a way or are there tools to do this? Select a track and click Randomized Velocity Range between X and Y.

Cal script would be what you are looking for. There may also be a midi effect (MFX) plugin that can do something similar as well.

Dan

Mixing is all about control.

Check out the Velocity MFX. F1  with the plug-in UI in focus brings up the help. The help often hides behind SONAR for me. The plug-in allows setting a velocity bounds with a randomizing function.

All methods of automatic randomization/humanizing (usually quantize) I've tested have been unsatisfactory, because they've been random :o/
The content of the music is not taken into account, so the changes don't serve the purpose.
Playing (the drums) manually and then quantizing 70-90% has served me much better.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

To each his own; but I think you are not looking at the full picture. I have already performed what I described in this thread, so for me it works extremely well. Like people, each song has it's own personality and you cannot simply apply a single method to every song.

What I am looking for are tools to make the job easier.

Thanks for you input.

These effects look great, how do I get them? I am currently using Sonar Platinum.

Thanks so much.

You already have it. Right-click on a MIDI track, then select Insert Effect|MIDI Effects.
