Renaming a Sonar Project
Hi All Apologies if I've broken any forum etiquette with this post - I've searched the onboard help files and Sonar online FAQ for an answer but have never managed to work it out. Sometimes when I'm writing a song, I'll create a project called 'NewSong' for instance. It can be a while before I've written the song and decided on a title. I know I can save the song as a project file or a bundle under a new name, but what I don't seem able to do is change the name of the entire project folder, so that I can recognise it by song name. When I tried renaming the song folder, the next time I tried to open the project Sonar told me it didn't exist. Presumably this is because the pathways changed? So if there is a way of renaming the entire project I'd really appreciate knowing how to do it. Thanks very much Best regards ji

I believe the best way is to do a "Save As" to a new folder then just delete the other one when you close the project. Renaming would be a nice feature in the future.

You may rename the cwp file and folder in Windows but you will have to use the Open function in the SONAR main menu or the Existing Projects function in the Start Screen and browse to load the project the first time or double-click cwp in Windows. The Most Recent Project list in SONAR stores the path along with the project name. This is why changing the project folder breaks the entry in the recent list.

Thanks Chuck - I'll give that a try although it sounds dangerous. Probably be worth creating a nonsense project to experiment with! :-) I've got so many song projects with folder names that don't relate to the eventual name of the song and for an old fart with a memory like mine, it's a nightmare trying to remember what songs are inside the folders. "Save As" is the best option but be aware of two important things: 1. Be sure to check "Copy all audio with project" in the save as dialog (if you use per project audio and do not check this, they will remain in the old folder ONLY, so you could inadvertently delete them). 2. Realize it ONLY copies over the audio used by the cwp you are saving... if you have multiple cwp's in the same folder, even "copy all audio with project" will NOT copy any audio that project does not use. This is, however, a nice technique to "clean audio" from a project folder that has seen multiple cwp iterations once completed. Just be aware of the above; and testing them out first is a wise idea.

All you really have to do is rename the .cwp file and optionally the folder name. However, the old name will remain on the recent-projects list. To fix that, you'll need to edit the registry key that maintains the list. If you're comfortable using regedit, just search on the old name. They key is called "Recent File List", e.g. \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Platinum\Recent File List I've been meaning to write a utility to do all that more easily, because I, too, start new projects under some generic name and change it later. The only reason I haven't written such a tool is that I keep thinking CW will surely add such an obvious feature to a future release! (Suggestion to CW: add a context menu to the start screen, e.g. right-click on a displayed project and select "Rename Project". While you're at it, how about making the start screen resizable, so I can see all 16 entries?)
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I already wrote a couple of tools the manage the recent list but do not allow entry editing. They are with the rest of the user utilities.

It works just as both scook and Bitflipper have said, There's never a problem re naming folders or files for me. They just won't open using the old name anymore on the quick list or start screen. As said, just open them dirrectly. Sonar works just like any windows program as far as file and folder managment go. You could rename using save as or just open the folder in windows explorer and make the changes. Same as a word doc or a picture.

Wow thanks everyone - I really appreciate you taking the time to educate me! ;-) I'll certainly try these suggestions on a dummy project - thanks to mettelus and bitflipper in particular, although I wouldn't dare to start messing with regedit - way beyond my skill-set! But bitflipper's suggestion to CW to introduce a 'Rename Project' function makes so much sense - I imagine most people who write songs within Sonar, rather than those that bring an already written song for recording, will start with a project name that will have no relevance to the name of the final song. Once again my thanks for your help - I'll let you know how I get on - Cheers

This would make Sonar life so much easier (for me at least). I start most song ideas with a generic name (NP2017-XXX).. Once I've completed a song, it would be really nice to just change the name.

You name the new project at the time you open the CWB file... Change the project name, that will set up the folders.

In simply rename the project and/or folder. I then manually load the project from the folder and as necessary remove the pinned older version.

Totally agree with this. Did a quick search in the Bakery for "rename" and got no hits so I added a request if anyone cares to vote for it or add anything. https://bakery.cakewalk.c...7/Rename-Sonar-project
