Special last version

Under the circumstances, Gibson should approve the writing of a last version of Sonar that unlocks any plugins so that they will work out side of Sonar and remove the current authentication protocol so that we are not plagued by activation issues once we’re untethered from Cakewalk.

Probably not going to happen since those are all licensing agreements mase with third parties. Not Nomad's fault. Maybe it would be a nice gesture on their part to offer reduced license on non-sonar version, but they tens to have good sales on those products anyway.

Not 3rd party plugins but any Cakewalk plugins that are locked to Sonar.

Most actual cakewalk plugins are not locked to sonar. Dimension pro, rapture, z3ta and many others work outside of cakewalk.

Great. We use Studio One as primary DAW BUT just purchased a complete interface/controller/monitor system for our songwriting room, based on SONAR. Have put in many hours lately getting into the SONAR groove, all for nought. Ouch!!

Totally agree with Mike on this one. I don't think they would even have to produce a special version - just issue registered users with a special unlock data file so that at least all the Cakewalk software would work if reinstalling. After all it's what we paid for!

Hello Mike (Mudgel),
I hope that there is a way to save Sonar and that it is not
necessary to give away all the good stuff CW developed for free.

Good idea but call me a frustrated Sonar user,
a bit to early for me.

best regards

Per Noel's post, CW has not only ceased development, but "reduced overall operations this past Friday". There was a rumor on the other thread that the entire Boston office has been closed. In other words, there may not be anyone to put out this mythical "final" release. If Gibson is frantically cutting costs in order to remain viable and/or appease creditors, then one last release of Sonar may be the last thing on their minds.

Re: Special last version 2017/11/22 08:46:04 (permalink)
I expect the chances of there being a 'last' version are about zero. Gibson won't make money and if they cared about any response/backlash it would have been indicated in the official announcement.  They'll just retain the IP/copy-write/patents (if any) and sue people that make something similar but won't do anything with the actual content itself. Those Cakewalk music babies have been drop-kicked into the ocean because they don't please the Gibson shareholders.

However, I'd think the chances of the chaps in the bakery doing something helpful outside of the constraints of their Gibson overlords are pretty good, even if its just a conversion tool for projects. Perhaps as an import option when they get wherever they end up :)

I obviously have no clue what's really going on and like everyone else am just speculating.

They're a company and therefore have shareholders/stockholders, even if its one family or a small group of people that have all the shares/stocks/whatever.

I noticed in the announcement they mentioned Philips, who are not mentioned in the wiki so the article is out of date.

I've not had cause to closely watch Cakewalk's business before so didn't know myself. But if a large multinational is involved you can bet the bottom line is all that counts. Anything borderline in profitability is probably more valuable written off as a tax-loss to boost profits elsewhere. So while employees are made redundant, customers are shafted and a good product gets flushed, profits are increased elsewhere for one year. The usual short term gain nonsense from greedy people. Or just bad management from Gibson. Same effect in the end as far as Cakewalk and Cakewalk's customers are concerned.

Not a lot of people going to be signing up for that new cloud service I suspect.

seems  that 2017.10 is the last update.
For me it´s not stable - for most of the user it might running stable -
don´t know.

I completely agree with Mike. An unlocked version would be the best thing they could do for us.

However, Gibson is going to be hoarding every asset they own in order to squeeze out every last bit of value that remains, which includes CW's intellectual property. As long as there's any possibility of another company (or companies) buying the source code or parts of it, or trademarks, they're not going to release any of it into the public domain.

Of course, that won't stop some enterprising hacker from doing it anyway...

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
