Preparing for the end......

I have a VS-700 system which is running stable, and I love having a control surface that functions with the software and it looks great in my basement studio / man cave. Through the help of many users in this forum I was able to keep it alive through all of the recent Sonar updates that no longer support its usefulness. Now that Sonar’s end of life is truly near, I need some more advice to keep it alive.

In order to preserve its usefulness and to keep it up and running.....what do I need to do? Is disconnecting from the internet to avoid any Microsoft updates the answer? Is there another DAW that the VS-700 could possibly function with?

yes take a disk image now and keep your machine away from major updates. yet every major windows update worked fine, i just needed to reinstall the vs700 drivers using the driver signing trick.

i actually intend to keep working on sonar for much longer and hopefully the vs700 even longer than sonar. now with the monthly update madness over I'll probably freeze my system and live happily ever after (many updates were useful but just keeping up to date, migrating other software along and doing all those images was quite an effort)

alongside I nevertheless look into alternatives but for me that'll be a long term process as I'm going to rush into committing to a new DAW. I will look into PT just because its THE standard vs more creative solutions (ableton, studio one, cubase, whatever) ... and eventually will see myself with one piece of software that I will  be just as familiar as with Sonar now.

as regards the vs-700: I have already extended its functionality by intercepting its MIDI messages and mapping the unused one to additional functionality using MIDI translator software (BOME). I'm pretty sure that will work with other DAW software as all support keyboard shortcuts and mackie protocol. so I will start with the later and build something similar as I have now in Sonar ... but will take time ...

if you'd like to do something similar and need more ideas / special assistance PM me while this forum exists. once it disappears you can find me at sound-rehab.com

I meant "as I'm NOT going to rush into committing to a new DAW" ... but if I edit my post will disappear

I’ve been demoing Studio One. Anyone get the VS700c to work as a controller in S1?

Cheers,

Supposedly by going to Settings >Network/Internet > WiFi and changing  to> Metered, then Windows can't just update. I did it, but think that making an image of your drive is more important.

their own hardware has really good / seemless intergration , compared.. so don't expect it to the same level with the vs700c.. if that supports mcu etc. should work to some extent.

if you don't need to upgrade then don't.. it annoys me that stuff without drivers get chucked.

will they make the drivers open source ? that'd prelong it.
