Why is everybody sad for Cakewalk???

I am bloody mad paying out all that money and also last year for Lifetime updates
They knew what was going to happen because lifetime updates pulled in quick money for th the struggling Gibbons.
We are the customer and have been screwed over.
For all I care you can throw Sonar in the bin  and start over .
Win 10 will gradually put Sonar out of action because they are all in the same game  MONEY!!

Most of us that can actually play music on a keyboard, who needs 1001 tracks and multiple effecting. 24 will do with some extras.

I will go Cubase Elements with my Genos and use Mixcraft pro for vst SIMPLE or in american SIMPLES!!
Forget pro this and that as it is only down to a musician who can play music.

For my part, I feel bad for the Cakewalk employees.

The cost of lifetime updates was the same as a years worth of updates.
I don't see how we (myself included) got screwed for that.

You have every right to be upset but this...

I do feel bad for Cakewalk employees. Most of them probably worked very hard and most of them probably didn't even know this was going to happen. not everyone is privy to inside company info. Even employees who work there.
Sure some of them are to blame. As well as Gibson. But none of us know the real story of what happened and we may never know the real story of what happened.
I cant and will never lay blame on people for something I don't even know details about.

The gibbons knew what was going to happen, but it seems Cakewalk didn't. From what I heard the Gibbon crones just marched into the Cake shop and said, "Right, pack up and go home. The show's over." I too feel very sad for the folks at Cakewalk.

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Re: Why is everybody sad for Cakewalk??? 2017/12/01 19:01:02 (permalink)
As much as I hate to agree, there were all sorts of rumors floating around the industry about Gibson getting rid of Cakewalk.  Yes, only rumors, but persistent rumors that even Cakewalk was most likely concerned about.   Plus it's been no secret that Gibson has been bleeding money for quite some time.

So while Cakewalk didn't know anything for certain, there was definitely writing on the wall.
But I got my lifetime subscription when it was first offered, and I can't complain about all the updates I got since then.
I definitely got my money's worth.  It was a win-win situation for both Cakewalk and it's customers.  Cakewalk/Gibson got a quick infusion of cash, and we users got a very sweet deal on monthly updates.

And finally, "Why is everybody sad for Cakewalk?"  I think the reasons are obvious.  The employees lost their jobs right before Christmas, with no advanced warning.  And it's sad because we're losing a great software company that many of us love very much, as well as future updates and support.   You can be MAD if you want, that won't change what's happened.  But we CAN be sad, because that's just how most of us feel.

Cakewalk had hired a couple great bakers (I think they were from Izotope).
I read this a few months back when they were in the forums explaining the new PRV changes.
They just released Momentum and 3 weeks later shut it down.

That doesn't seem like a "We should have seen the writing on the wall".
That sounds more like they were hiring better engineers to make a better product.

Im just as baffled as anyone of you. but I cant start saying "I blame you" without knowing the whole story.

With all that has been made public, it seems that in many ways the Baker's hands were tied.

For me personally, the software had long since headed in a direction away from my needs, my account eventually became impossible to access, and it wasn't worth fixing (I am still on 8.5.3).  Nevertheless, one never wants to see a company like Cakewalk fail.  Certainly the failure hurts the industry as a whole, and being terminated just before Thanksgiving is flat out cold.

I'm not mourning this is an opportunity I should have taken before to switch to Studio One 3. I will do that in the not too distant future. Sonar is alright it did what it needed to do. There is always better. This dog has well and truly been put to sleep. Some may mourn some will just purchase a new dog. I was happy that the stock sounds were able to make half decent music with. Simple to use..some the Piano Roll view is a nightmare!!! How ever the fx were good some those are what made Sonar ok. I used to mess around in Ableton now that flows like the Niagra a little Studio that was fantastic. Sonar gets jammed a bit now and again. You have to remember sequences with other DAWS you just get on with it. Would never use Cubase it's too ridget. Great Piano Roll. Sonar is not the Be all and end all. Maybe it is the end. I don't see anyone coming in to rescue it. It didn't have the name on the street to easily promote it. You would have to put millions into it. I don't think even Microsoft would offer to do that. Maybe Richard Branson!

Grow up. Get over it. Life happens. You can still use Sonar for the foreseeable future.

As someone one (mebbe a different forum), you can now use Sonar until it breaks (how many years is that going to be ? ) but at the same time take your time in becoming proficient in another DAW.

But I do feel sorry more for those that lost their jobs, or will lose them in the future.

For those about to Bake (or Baked), I salute you !

Cheers,
Jerry

I feel sad for the employees too. I've been made redundant just before Xmas on three separate occasions, and it really, really sucks.

Re: Why is everybody sad for Cakewalk??? 2017/12/01 21:26:14 (permalink)
As I mentioned in another thread, I paid the additional $99 last year for the "lifetime" updates.  As it was, then, $99 per year, I got a second year out of it so I consider I broke even.

As far as Gibson, there is a "rumor post" on another forum, that the "rumor is" Fender is considering buying Gibson.   There was even a photoshopped picture of a Les Paul with a Fender key head.  I don't know how valid this "rumor" is, but as Fender has been buying up or buying the distributor rights to other brands (they did it a year or so a go with Gretsch) it may be a legitimate rumor........... I saw on the Nashville Tennessean on line newspaper that Gibson was selling a warehouse in Nashville and I've seen on a couple of sites that Gibson is closing the Memphis operation (makes hollow body electrics).

Re: Why is everybody sad for Cakewalk??? 2017/12/01 22:08:02 (permalink)
Cakewalk developers and userbase had/have passionate relationship with SONAR. The product is awesome and has required enormous work of great engineering and thinking and it may be lost gradually if codebase is no more maintained.

I feel SONAR is bigger thing than just an item in large company's catalog. Gibson as a corporation does not have feelings and they have to evaluate things on financial basis. I accept that but I'm still sad about how this happened. With different leaders inside the company we'd be now using SONAR 11.2017 and looking forward to see what cool features Bakers have been developed for the next year.

Last time I checked my copy of SPlat still works .

My Heart goes out to all the Cakewalk employees that have made SONAR The Awesome DAW that it is...
I sincerely hope they can weather the Storm and land on dry ground ...

As far as Gibson goes I'm pissed ...
I'm not pissed enough to burn my Gibson Guitars in my Fireplace in Protest

My wallet in now closed for any thing that involves a current Management / Era Gibson Product
