Why I started using Sonar

I saw the box in pc world in the miscellaneous section it was a cheap version of Sonar HS4. There was a steep learning curve but started understand it after a while. Came onto the forums with questions. They were a lot of arrogant people back then some from Manchester. When i posted some songs the arrogant ones became abit more responsive. John was a pain in the ass with his love for Sonar but when I jumped to Sonar Studio we kind of gelled. Then there was the skip to X1 where I thought the DAW seemed to be looking and feeling like the other DAWs. Then SPLAT came along and I was like hmm this is not bad. Made some bangers on SPLAT. Now its been placed in the fx bin I thought oh well I tried ABLETON really liked it but its not the way I like to work. Tried STUDIO 1 DEMO and I thought yes this is the one but I didnt have the cash for it then. I felt more comfortable working in Studio One and my music had a better eb and flow. Going back to Sonar realised that it is a broken product especially the internal clock. The plug ins Rapture Dim Pro are excellent but sound broke in Sonar. If you use them in other DAWs they sound really good. In short Gibson has put the wounded horse out of its misery. Really with legacy code there is only so much you can do. Audio drop outs were the norm with Sonar. Now its time for a professional DAW. With good quality videos on you tube. Professionals who swear by the product. No more rock music intros nav demonstrations. No more mediocre marketing. Cake if you are still around build a new DAW from the ground up and make sure it is 100% before you start building on top of it.

Can you elaborate on the internal clock comment? I definitely had issues with songs many years ago where I felt they started dragging.  I have never actually measured the final song but it was just a feeling.

If you use the metronome it starts to drift ever so slightly but slightly enough to notice a difference. You will never get a tight beat using the metronome in Sonar. You have to accommodate Sonar and I guess that is what we have been used to.

I was on top of the world with an ADAT, Soundcraft mixer, aphex w big bottom, alesis 6360 comp and a lexicon reflex. I was a PC network specialist at the time but had now idea whatsoever that the PC could now do this until I took my ADAT to a guys house here to get some piano tracks on a song. He does gymnastic floor music in digital performer (on a mac) this was in 2004. I was blown away. I did a little altavista-ing and found out that Cakewalk, a company who did the purple DOS midi sequencing program was doing audio multitrack on the PC. No kidding. I want that, someone get me that.

Well the ADAT, soundcraft and outboard gear were sold off in a hot minute, and went virtual.

Absolutely outta site.

Re: Why I started using Sonar 2017/12/06 22:25:27 (permalink)
When I walked away from the music business in 1997 (after a 20-year career that saw me at the bottom, sniffing the top, then back down again), I was sequencing with a Roland MC50mkII and their SC-88 sound module; recorded with a Roland VS-880 Expanded, and had all the accessories to make good stuff.
Eighteen years later, in August 2015, I came back to the business, but by then my gear was quite out of date (couldn't even sell the VS-880 in 2005).  My MC50mkII still worked, but my old 3.5 floppies with all my MIDIs wouldn't work anymore.

So off I went in search of MIDI sequencing software online.  After a lot of reading, I checked out Cubase, but couldn't actually afford it at the time. Then came Music Creator 7, which I bought but didn't do much with it because learning curve vs time. When I did dabble with it I discovered it was MUCH different and MUCH more than just something I could do MIDI with.  And that was a bit intimidating so I left it sit for a few months.

In the meantime, I discovered the reason my old floppies wouldn't work was because the disk drive in the MC50mkII was half dead.  A new drive made the floppies come back to life (after 18 years in storage!), but then I couldn't find another SC-88 that was guaranteed to work OR at a low price.  Enter Music Creator again....

Music Creator lacked a few things that I needed, plus I still didn't have a decent sound module.  By now it is January 2016, and I discovered Roland's SCVA software. Bought it!  Then I looked closely at SONAR, which had what I needed, plus an attractive pricing plan.  Bought it!

And I've never looked back, nor at any other DAW, until now.

DAW: Cakewalk by Bandlab (latest version) - x64
VST: Roland Sound Canvas VA
Hardware: Roland MC50mkII Sequencer; Yamaha DGX-660 keyboard; Steinberg UR-44 Interface
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
