Most interfaces today are USB.  Works fine for most of us.

Slot interfaces are few - rme and lynx are two of the best.  Can't think of many "new" and cheap cards for audio.

I also use a USB card now. Didn't notice any difference with a pci one in terms of sound quality.

If you have a good reliable USB chipset, it’s all good.

Yes.  In fact, unless your interface is USB3, you should stick with USB2 ports anyway.

NO.. I'd give mine but I tossed it in the garbage.

In no order of recommended brands these are common ones people here depend on.
RME, Motu, Steinberg, Focusrite, Presonus and Tascam.

You should really branch out your research getting an answer from one person on a forum is not going to give much of an idea of what's out there. Go here and read the reviews etc.

Here's my shopping guide for interfaces with most of the features to think about.

Edit- Oh, your on XP, that will certainly rule out anything new. But my M audio fast track pro and my TAscam never worked under XP anyways. The Tascam worked fine under W7. So having XP is really a crippling thing if your doing audio,,, fine for midi.

USB all the way, PCI is a faff and out of favour now - I switched to Focusrite gear years ago from an M-Audio PCI card. My first one was firewire but I binned that a few years back when firewire fell out of favour. I have a Scarlett 2i4 now - perfect for my needs but I recommend you do your research. Lots of buzz around Thunderbolt but that seems to be a Mac thing so far as I can see.

Sonar Platinum, Win10 Pro 64-bit, 16Gb RAM, Six-core AMD, Twin SSD. Instruments: Roland A88 and Taylor 314CE all through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. More ambition than talent.
