Should I update to Windows 10?

I’m on Windows 7 just now running Sonar Platinum. Should I update my operating system to Widows 10 before the servers go down? Any advice welcome …

Many thanks in advance.

no windows 10 sux.......if everythings working well with your computer and your software....don't upgrade, because the cakewalk servers could go down any day, you should dis-enable all windows updates, because updates can cause problems with your software

Windows 10, 64 bit, intel core i7-6500U CPU @ 2.50GHZ  2.59GHZ......12 gig ram ....Sonar lifetime updates, presonus audiobox 1818 interface, and beringer UFX1604 mixer interface/control surface...... All round musician, multi-instrumentalist/songwriter.....attempting to produce good music.....started on music creator 6 2014, bought sonar 2015....and now invested in lifetime updates......Learning always!!!!Thanx cakewalk and online forum

IMHO it depends........Are you a hobbyist or a do you make a living with Sonar.

    The reason I ask this:
I am in a home studio, just me. I am retired IT guy like so many here. I write, record and have a great time. Play out now and then
I am on win 8.1x64 and have been since it came out.
I have zero issues with Sonar or any other apps I have and I have a ton.
Sound forge Pro 11 and Sonar Plat are the main ones. But I have ton of third party plugs and apps.
NO issues so why would I upgrade? I would have to be crazy. I had win 10 installed for about a mointh. I did not like it. JUs my 2 cents. So it soes not benefit me to open that can of worms.

But, If i made my living running a studio I might think differently.
So I am sure some of those guy will chime in. And others like me also.

    I would strongly advice no...

The most scary thing for Sonarians is Sonar will stop working because of Win10 function updates. Some of us are freezing setup or at least considering doing it to ensure it will not happen.

If you plan to work in Sonar the best option is to stay on Win7 as updates there are rare and fix type so probability to break is lowest on online system.

I regret very much my decision to migrate my PCs to Win10. No benefits of it but many problems. On Win7 I had completely no problems. On Win10 I was forced after many frustrating hours of fixing, reinstallation from scratch on one of them etc to restrict update possibility.

OS in fact is only to provide platform for application you use. Just by itself it doesn't matter. Is any person in the world who is using just pure OS on his/her computer?

    Regards,
    Piotr

If you want to keep your DAW and OS in isolation, or simply turn off Windows updates, it's totally your choice.
If you run or install other (and older) software on your system. then you may have to re-consider eventually, when Windows programming has moved ahead and left old software behind . . . or when the install / update routine no longer works.

If you're tech savvy, there is a way to turn of Windows 10 updates . . . if not, I would advise staying with Windows 7.

I updated my system to Windows 10 because I read there were some new audio advantages, to be honest, I never noticed any difference . . . Windows 10 is like Windows 7 shaken and stirred.

Unfortunately, my older software collection . . . one by one has stopped working properly in Windows 10 . . . with each new update I test things out to see if I need to retrograde a Windows update because something doesn't work.
It's no way to run a DAW system . . . but I have to keep other software current like Adobe, AutoCAD, MS Word etc.

If you decide against Win 10 (And there are some valid reasons to do so, depending on your situation)... Rather than stick with Win 7, I would update to Windows 8.1, which is more stable and much better optimized.  Go on Ebay and look for a vendor selling OEM licenses of Win 8.1 Pro.  (I paid $12 about a month ago, and there didn't seem to be a shortage of licenses for sale).

There's nothing physical to deliver -- you're only getting the product key.  You will need to download the Win 8.1 installer from Microsoft.  (There are lots of online step by step videos and articles on the whole procedure).

I can attest to that....Runs like a dream. And I actually have control of what happens (well for the most part.

Windows 10 has a real bad problem right now with class compliant drivers and midi devices not working.... I have been working long and hard to fix the problem, trying nearly every fix I could find on the net, with no results.... I am going back to Windows 7 after I finish the album Im working on.... to my ears, it does sound somewhat better, but its not worth it compared to the cost of the time I have lost.

when I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10, all my picture files were taken out of the folders I had them in and windows 10 just scattered them all over the place......and the Cortina(Talking thinking computer assistant crap), Yeah from day one windows 10 annoyed me........I really would strongly advise not upgrading to windows 10, ive heard a heap of people praise windows 8.1........its got me thinkin I might do that also.

I reverted to W 8.1 as to me it's half way between W7 and W10. I'm sitting on a nice solid fence.

Out of all the OS I have from XP through W10,   W10 is my least favorite. It's a bit of a bully and tries to think for me. It keeps trashing my settings and drivers.
But that said, I have it on 3 computers and , Oh well.   Just don't pay for it, it is still free until the end of the year.

When I saw this thread title I figured it would be full of responses from MS fanbois posting about how great Win 10 is, so it was a relief to see a more realistic discussion. As a YAITP (Yet Another IT Professional) I would have to agree with most posts here - better to avoid Win 10 if you can. Windows 7 is a good solid OS - no reason to feel bad about sticking with it. The only down side is that support for Win 7 will end in just over two years. Of course you can use an OS even after MS support ends - some people are still using XP! The MS OS that would be better would be Windows 8.1 - very solid and smooth. I've been running it on my DAW since it came out and it's pretty trouble-free for me. But if you're going to upgrade, be sure to go with Win 8.1, not Win 8 - that was kinda messed up until 8.1 fixed it.

Still on Win 7 here for my main DAW. It never goes online, never gets updated and is as solid as a rock.

I also have several system images so in the event of a major hardware failure I'll be able to get back to making music fairly painlessly

I have a home studio and current hardware.  I have no problems with Win 10, although Win 10 is not for everyone.  Just stating my own experience.  I do some computer support and all my clients except one have either upgraded to Win 10 or bought new PC's with Win 10 and none currently have any issues with it.  The one client that is not on Win 10 is because I advised him not to upgrade because of his old (marginally compatible) hardware.

Many, many thanks for all the helpful replies.

The general consensus here so far seems to be to stick with Windows 7 or perhaps to update to Windows 8.1?
Stratman70, I do make money from recording in a small studio and that’s one of the reasons I’m wondering about an update …
and like you, seem to have overindulged in the plugin department somewhat!

Is there the danger that 3rd party plugins stop supporting Windows 7?

Can I confirm with you all that if I were to stick with Windows 7, then in the future move to Windows 10 but the Cakewalk servers were gone, that I would simply be able to update to Windows 10 without having to worry about reauthorizing Sonar in any way? (I've downloaded and backed up all the SPLAT files)

My computer is stable just now and is used exclusively for audio (and video sometimes) and is only online for updates and patches and transferring files.

    Thanks again for the help.

If its off-line and everything works, there is no need to upgrade, at least now.  Although I'm happy with Win 10, as stated previously, its not for everyone and especially those with older hardware.  At the point you do replace the PC it will then be time to adapt to the new OS (whatever that is at the time you do).  Whether you will be able to install Sonar with that new system??

I would say, if you did update to windows 10, you would have to update to the version of windows 10 from a month ago........because sonar is not being updated anymore, any future updates could cause problems.......windows 8.1 sounds like the safest bet.

I'm still running SPLAT on Window 7 Professional and I'm also running Studio One 3.5 and Digital Performer on Windows 7 with absolutely no hiccups. I figure if it ain't broke don't fix it.

That tells me you should leave things alone. After all, what do you think will be BETTER if you swicth to W10
If anything a new SSD drive will make a huge difference, but not the OS.

Thanks again everyone. I think my decision is to stay with 7.

However, can someone clarify for me?

Let’s say I do a full system drive backup (clone) to another drive and in the future my system hard drive fails. Would I be able to boot from that backup drive and not have to reauthorize SPLAT? i.e. would it just open up as normal with all my plugins etc intact?

(I’ve never had a system drive fail, so have never booted from a backup and am a bit worried that, yes all the programmes return but they need to be reauthorized, including SPLAT)

If its an "exact copy" - either a clone or full disc image (either will work) everything should work without an reauthorization.  I just did something similar on my DAW desktop, except I upgraded to a larger drive.  Did a clone and booted with new drive and everything worked (I then expanded the "C" partition to the full size of the new drive).   However, I've done clones in the past that didn't work properly so if you do a clone, install and test it out (boot with it) to make sure all is OK before putting it away for backup.

This is why I just bought a new SSD drive for my C drive at this point in time.
I'm not a fan of cloning because I feel after 3 years a system needs a fresh start.
Nice clean install, no phantoms or ghosts. Everything up to date and I reverted to W8.1 just to rule out the W10 update issues for the future.
I put the old C drive in a $12 Drive encloser so there is my back up if needed. I figure it has a pretty long shelf life.
Sure a clean install takes a little longer but I feel it's time well spent.
I set my laptop up beside the machine I'm re doing and will work on stuff while software loads.
With an new SSD C drive and all my software backed up on another SSD Data drive things go pretty fast.

Then later on if I find something I forgot to install, it's all there in the Data drive so takes a minute to install. I just installed 8.5 yesterday because I needed Lexicon and LP 64 Multiband. Did a bare bones , took about 3 minutes. Re scan plug ins, bingo,, done.

Windows 8.1 gets 3 more years of Extended Support compared with Win7 although only on older hardware.

Thanks again everyone. Tomorrow’s job is to do some cloning and make sure that everything is as future proof as it can be.

This forum will be sadly missed if / when it disappears. I don’t post often, but have been with Cakewalk for over twenty years and often pop into the forum to catch up and if I’m looking for a solution to something. I am dismayed at the state of affairs.

    Someone buy Cakewalk pleeeeeeease!

Any aversion towards win10 at this moment in time is missguided in regards to Sonar. I am running Win10 with the latest updates and patches and the latest version of Sonar and there are no problems what so ever. Win10 is a better OS than win 7 and Win 8.x.

Then again you don't need the "best" OS version to run your DAW. If I were you though, I would update my software as much as I could before locking it in due to the developments with Sonar, or lack thereof, going forward.

For what its worth I have worked in IT for 15 years and win10 in the best of to come out of MS yet. You are better off installing it than remaining with win7. Then again it it aint broke I guess ... as long as you are able to produce the OS doesn't matter that much.
