I'm not sure how long I'll host it but its cached here on my website for now. I think the backdrop I have is quite appropriate :)

Ouch! The first (most recent) entry is about Momentum. Do you plan to keep blogging? Doesn't have to be about SONAR.
PS: I don't get the "backdrop" reference...

I have a little more time on my hands (not for long haha) so I'll periodically post some stuff that interests me. Happy to take requests if you guys are interested in technology topics :)

The backdrop is a classic Boston sunset on the Charles river taken from close to the Hatch Shell if you are familiar with Boston. I thought the Boston sunset imagery was appropriate for the shutting down of Cakewalk. I used to frequently bike to work and that pic was taken on my commute back home. We have a fantastic bike path that runs by the river from downtown to close to where I live. Biking was very meditative and I would get to work more relaxed than when I started out!

Thanks for your awesome work Noel.

There's a typo in the URL of "My Blog" in your signature. It has a comma instead of a period.

I would love to hear your thoughts about writing MIDI applications using Microsoft's UWP.
It mostly works, but has some problems. One show-stopper bug was reported in detail some 4 years ago and Microsoft have yet to address it. Sending SysEx messages to some USB devices locks up the app! :(
This happens on my Roland USB device, but not on my M-Audio USB device.
Do you still have access to Pete Brown to try to get some insider info?

Best of luck for the future.

Cheers
Eddie

Hi Eddie,

Thanks for the bug report :) The link looked OK in my sig but somehow had bad data. I deleted it and recreated it and it works now.
Sure I'll try and write up something about the UWP MIDI stuff. Are you seeing the Sysex issue in SONAR's UWP implementation as well? We did have a report about this that was logged with Microsoft but it only happened on some devices. I'm still in touch with Pete off and on. You can also try and ping him directly on Twitter or on Linkedin.

thanks,
Noel

I didn't try UWP with Sonar because the issue occurs with the MIDI demo project in the official Microsoft Universal Samples GitHub repository and Microsoft admitted there was a problem.

Just now, I fired up Sonar Platinum, switched to UWP and tested and it successfully sent a SysEx message to my Roland USB device! The same SysEx message locks up the MIDI demo project from Microsoft and my own UWP software.

I wonder what you're doing differently from Microsoft to make it work.

Cheers
Eddie

Haha we had quite a few changes from the sample so most likely fixed in our implementation :)

Kirk Hammett reminds me more and more of Tuck Andress as he gets older. Both awesome guitarists though.

Hi Noel, if you’re still listening, apart for my best wishes to you et al, it was nice to see Ron Kuper briefly stick his head in here and suggest he’d be a goer for any open source projects based on Sonar that may come out of whatever it is that’s being transitioned to.

An Interesting thought, even though I can’t see Sonar being open sourced. Surely the IP is worth something to Gibson. I sure know it would be to an open source community.
