Question about Sonar 8.5 Studio Updates

I am currently running 8.5 Studio, as I have problems with Producer. I am wondering about the updates that are available on the product page. One is 8.5.2, which I have downloaded but not installed. The other is 1.7 GB. Does anyone know if this is an update, or the entire program (in case you lost the  installation DEV)?

Thanks,
Mike

Look at the "about" screen in the help menu. It will show you which version you are running. If it's lower than 8.5.2, then 8.5.2 is an update.

I already know I am running Studio 8.5, because I just installed it from the DVD a few days ago. So obviously 8.5.2 would be an update. My question is, the 8.5.2 update took around 15 minutes to download. The other update, however, is 1.7 GB (more than a two hour download). What exactly is this update? The same thing that is on my DVD, or a massive updated version of the entire program? I don't want to download and install such a large file if I don't know what it is. I would ask support if that was still possible, but of course that has been a joke for months now. I was hoping someone on the forum would know this.

I suspect the 1.7GB download is the 8.5 installer.  If you have that on disc, you're covered.  But you will also want to DL the 8.5.2 and 8.5.3 updates for Studio.

This is kind of funny as you got my curiosity about the 8.5 versions.
So I google Sonar 8.5 and t his was the top of the search.

We soon forget how good it's been here since we adopted the Forum Host system.

Funny how google works, it will put the most popular search at  the top so the most popular search for 8.5 is 8.5 FREE. Probably more pirated versions than legal were in use back then.

Any How version  8.5.3 I think was the last so might be what that download is about. Just sit thight , some one here with a better memory than me will chime in.

I'm in no rush, I already downloaded the 242 MB 8.5.2 update. The 1.7 GB is another story. It's a "setup file." Is this what you mean Jon D by it being an installer? The DVD file is over 2GB. that's what confused me. I thought it was a massive update. There is no 8.5.3 update for Studio as far as I can see. Unless the info on my account is incorrect. I'll google just in case. Who knows, it may take me to the old announcement of updates to 8.5. I did install both Producer patches. But Pro is not working right, which is why I am trying to get Studio going. My only problem is Kontakt. The sound cuts out now and then. I can get it back by hitting ! button on the Kontakt Player, but unless I can figure out why it's happening, I may have to shelve Kontakt. There go my best strings, Cinematic Strings.

Addendum: Did some Googling, I don't see an 8.5.3 for studio, it appears 8.5.2 may be the only one. One site I went to took me to a place called Sonar Music, with a cute girl smiling at me, and everything in Russian. Needless to say, I got the hell out of there asap.

Cakewalk does not issue patches. Instead updates are delivered as complete files. Given the size of the update, it would appear there are changes to most of the the application. Whether you want to run the last version of the 8.5 is your decision but failing to download it while it is still available may not be very wise.

Yes, the setup file is the installer.  No way to know if it includes the latest update though.  Best to do what scook suggests and download it anyway.

I recently re-installed Studio 8.5 on my computer (just in case SPLAT stops working).
If I remember Sonar Studio 8 was sold as a DVD (boxed) but 8.5 was a download update. It only worked if 8 was already installed on the same computer. The other files are additional updates, bug fixes, and extra content which need to be installed in order for them to work. Yes, they are big files, and they install like fresh installations.

I suspect that it has to do with an instrument library update(the 1.7gb).
You can do a custom install for just the Sonar installer. It is best to install all updates to 8.5.3.

In your other thread you mentioned problems with the Pro version and the Vst scans, was that updated to 8.5.3? If not you may want to update that to see if it corrects the issue you had with that.

8.5 did come as a boxed disc set, that os the way that I have it and there was no need to have 8 installed.

Yes, the 8.5 box was a full version like all boxed versions of SONAR through the X-Series. The 8.5 update download was not a full version. It was the first update available as a download and to save bandwidth Cakewalk did not create a full download version. Instead it relied on an existing SONAR 8 installation. Full downloads started with X1.

Thanks JD. So there is aan 8.5.3 update. I plan to install all updates at this point. If they break things I can always go back to the pure DVD version.

Re: Question about Sonar 8.5 Studio Updates 2017/12/18 18:06:56 (permalink)
Things are becoming a little clearer. It is confusing going back in time to figure this stuff out, considering that changes were constantly being made in the process!

To summarize again my situation: I had bought Studio 8.5, but barely used it, upgrading to Producer 8.5 within a few months. I intsalled both Producer patches. But I have had problems with Producer almost from the get go. Deleting a synth would crash it, for example. EWSO basses would crash it. And lately the plugin tool stopped working right. Presciently, a couple years ago I made copies of my install DVD's for 8.5 Producer. There are four of them (Studio 8.5 was a single DVD). Turns out that was a good idea, as when I recently reinstalled Producer (following a total Windows 7 crash), I found that disc one, the main one, wouldn't install. My copy worked fine, however. I also installed Dim Pro and Additional Content from the original discs. I passed on Rapture. I installed both Pro patches.

Producer was working about the same as it had worked originally. I decided to install Studio, hoping it would work right, and give me all the features I need. It does work well, but I'm having trouble with Kontakt. I will install both .2 and .3 updates, hopefully that will solve that problem. If everything works well, it will have been a success. Studio 8.5.3 will then be my latest working version of Sonar, unless other options somehow become available.

Yes CW has published patches. I have files called Producer852Patch (380 Mb) and Producer853Patch (230 Mb) downloaded from CW.
Thinking about future use, I'm worried whether there are (were) separate patches for 32 bit and 64 bit OS or are they perhaps both selectable in these.

I think as is the case today, that the installer has both 32 and 64 versions and you make your choice during installation.

So now I am a little confused. I have boxed studio 8 (1 DVD) and producer 8.5 (4 DVDs). I have checked my downloads backups and I have Studio 8.5 and 8.52 as patches. For Producer 8.5, I have 8.5.2 and 8.5.3 patches.

Then I saw I also have a Studio 831 patch.

Then I began searching the Knowledge base and I see 8.0.1 and 8.02 patches as well as 8.3 patches in addition to all the dimension pro, rapture, beatscape...So there is a lot involved.

Is there a central listing somewhere that puts it all together? It's hard to reconstruct.

I find if I search patches or updates as terms, I get the better results than say Sonar 8.5 as a  tag...
