Melodyne Converting Audio To MIDI Issue

OK...

If I simply drag an audio track to a MIDI track, Sonar is locking up, but If I first convert it to a Region FX, it works fine... Did I miss something? Isn't it supposed to work simply by dragging without first making it a melodyne region?

I know it makes sense to first make it a Melodyne Region, but I thought it is supposed to work with the simple drag?

I thought it was half working the other day by converting to MIDI but not converting the pitches.... Leaving all notes as one pitch...

At least I can make it work.... Just trying to understand...

Thanks...

The leaving all notes at one pitch thing, isn't that to do with having it set in percussion mode? (whatever it is called)

Normaly i would think so, but it somehow changes on it's own.

First track changed pitches fine, but the next did not and i changed nothing inside of Melodyne

BTW... this thread is really about the issue of creating/not regions before this function works... but thanks for the thought...

I just fired up Platinum and loaded up an old project, dragged a lead guitar part straight to a midi track and it all worked fine, notes as they should be and no lock up.

An interesting thing about this feature, I have installed Splat on a bunch of different computers. I have not done anything to authorize Melodyn. Yet this feature works. I had a little pitch issue with a vocal track and I did the regional effect to the little clip and Melodyn was not grayed out, and it opened the editor but I couldn't do anything? Oh well. I copied and pasted the same phrase from a different part of the song and moved on. When I closed Sonar later there was a splash screen that had been hidden behind Sonars window telling me I needed to enter a serial number. So It's weird how the audio to midi works without issue, It even creates a Melodyn folder. This is great because I really never use the pitch correction any how. And I do have V Vocal.

But I do use this feature a lot and yes, you never have to create a regional effect first, just drag and drop. And I've never changed that setting obviously as I couldn't even if I wanted to. So far I've only got it to work with Bass Tracks. I played a little melody on a guitar and dragged it and it made a huge mess even though it was a few notes.. You know the little hook in Mother little Helper played on a ? Sitar?  Any how I had to do it t he hard way and used my keyboard.
Maybe it only likes Bass notes.

Ok yes, what keni said is happening is kind of randomly happening for me......it doesn't seem to be consistant......one day I drag it, and it is melodic, all the notes etc......next day it just converts the rythem and its all same pitch...........I wonder if its kinda going on what I set it on percussive or melodic in melodyne from the last time I used melodyne?

    Ha! Only bass notes?

The other day it successfully converted a bass track but gwve timing only result for a monophonic guitar line.

Today it repeatedly locked up on a similar guitar track, but finally worked if i first made the guitar track a Melodyne region...

    Hi Paul...

I thought about that but the other day it correctly changed the first track, but the following track yielded only timing though i did not change anything in between...

Yeah, I just think its a small bug possibly.....cause it doesn't seem to be consistant.

I'm actually really getting into the whole audio to midi feature, I recorded acoustic drums, and turned it to midi,,,,then turned that into midi bass and piano.....oh after dropping the midi note an octave or 2.......sounded phat az.........and then I converted lead acoustic guitar into midi piano, wasn't perfect, but was easily enough edited.......next, I'm planning on converting percussive funky Jethro tull style flute into midi, and then turning that into drums and bass????...I haven't done it yet, but I'm hangin to experiment with that

I sure hope it continues to work because it's become a Must Have  feature for me for making backing tracks. I can play a bass part in one or so passes and don't have to worry about precise timing or pitch. I don't even have to worry about what the bass sounds like!  I turn it into a midi track and takes a bout 10 minutes to edit and get sounding exactly the way I wanted it. Huge time saver as it would take all day to figure out how to play the bass line on a keyboard for me.

I own a set of digital drums too, but we actually could just as easily set up some mikes on a bunch of cardbaord boxes and record that and use Drum Replacer to trigger AD2.

Cactus - very interested. Could you explain your process? I have to chart out some original jazz tunes for a future recording session and I have no problem laying out general chord charts but I do have to notate the lead/head lines. I was going to play them on bass > convert to midi and edit/cleanup in midi > bring into Presonus Notation software.  This would be very cool indeed if it worked....and what a time saver :)

So far I have only used it for Bass and it always works with only few minor edits to the notes. One thing that seems consistent is the duration is always longer than is should be. I select all and drag the duration back about a 1/32.

It\s dead simple. Drag an audio track to a midi track.
The interesting thing is this feature works on any of my computers running Sonar even if that computer is not authorized for Melodyn. I never use Melodyn for vocal pitch correcting so I haven't authorized it in years.
