CAKEWALK HOME STUDIO 2002 - HEY..WHY NOT ??

WHY?
Well, Following Recent Tragic Events in the CW Fold...
1. To test the resilience of the program given a multitude of OS changes over the years....... and surprise surprise (WELL NOT REALLY) it works fine with yesterday's unsolicited & substantial Windows 10 Update.
2. To remind myself how easy it was for performer such as I, who still uses midi and a Roland SD5 Sound Module for live gigs,to double click in windows explorer and the midi file in all it's multi track glory would simply open and play through CW Sonar and outputting to the sound module effortlessly. This was essential for tweaking and altering midi tracks to get best musical results live. PS: Use Van Basco (Light weight / never fail program for Live Gig Midi & lyric playback.)
SO,
With regard to MIDI Editing, I am having so much trouble sourcing a replacement DAW that even comes close to the SONAR level of simplicity , intuitiveness, comprehensiveness & accuracy of the CW product.
And who started the vicious rumor that MIDI is old fashioned ?.....................'definitely FAKE NEWS .
Instrument Tracks ?............No........I prefer MIDI Tracks
I am torn between sticking with CW SPLAT for my MIDI work and learning another DAW for STUDIO Mixing OR
Moving entirely to a new DAW.
Maybe I have to multi task..............Use 2 DAWS .....................one for MIDI.............one for Audio Mixing.
Sounds Messy !!! ..........and I'm male....multitasking can't happen (apparently ;).
I have tried most of the DAWS on offer and they all have so much to offer ..Every which way but loose.....but they seem to provide their MIDI tools under sufferance ......except of course for one powerful player who I wont single out ( BUT.. for the purposes of this exercise.. Let's Just call him 'HERR ICE CUBE'.
He has a magnificent program which has supported MIDI development for untold years and should be applauded for his work and intricate software developments.
His program should not be ignored .......esp by those of us who dabble VERY & EXTREMELY
deeply into MIDI BITS and BYTES.
Such Midi enthusiasts took us to where we are today and I salute such pioneers.

Notwithstanding ....Any Alternative suggestions for 'Easy MIDI' editing via a double click from windows explorer would be most appreciated.
Cheers...........Frank in OZ

Are you aware that you can click a midi file directly and it will open Sonar with TTS_1 and be ready to play instantly?
First you need to associate midi file types with Sonar in Windows.
Then go to Preferences/MIDI/Devices and un tick all midi output boxes. If there is no midi output chosen then Sonar loads TTS_1.  Huge timesaver for pre viewing midi files. If you like the file, just save it as a CWP and carry on.

I just tried a bunch of other DAW's and you are correct, only Sonar is the KING of midi editing.
I also have Cubase Elements 7 ( $100 not on sale)  and everything is much harder to do. It will work if the world comes to an end and Sonar is long gone I would suffer Cubase and get used to it. BUt there is no reason to stop using Sonar and I'll even revert to X3e before I start using Cubase.

I have 2002, along with Sonar home Studio 6, Cakewalk Home Studio 6 (late 90's), Sonar 8.5 Studio and 8.5 Producer. The latter doesn't work right, so I've intsalled studio and that's working well (except for Kontakt). I also reinstalled Sonar Home Studio 6 on my old desktop and it looks really cool. Haven't gone back further than that. But you certainly can do midi editong on any of them. It's plugin support that may be a problem.

I'm all for DannyDee's suggestion.

However, to the topic. I might have a solution for you. It's called Band in a Box. BiaB handles MIDI files easily and once they've been converted over to BiaB format, there's a lot that can be done with them. Plus, BiaB comes with another, entirely different program called Real Band, which is a full-fledged DAW, intended primarily for working with audio files -- but it can handle MIDI as well as BiaB native files. You can use VSTs, VSTis, DXes, and DXis with both BiaB and RealBand. It has one limitation in this regard -- only 32-bit plug-ins are recognized, but the inexpensive jbridge utility can handle the 64-bit to 32-bit conversion for you.  BiaB is an incredibly flexible piece of software and, perhaps best of all, it isn't all that expensive, especially when compared to what your average, full-featured DAW costs these days.
If you've never heard of or used BiaB (but I'll bet you have), you can find out more at pgmusic.com.

I've been a Band in a Box user for almost 20 years. One of its most useful features is being able to use it as backing tracks. There are thousands of BiaB-format tunes out on the Internet, so generally it isn't that hard finding a specific tune, especially if it's become something of a classic.

I use BiaB as an indispensable part of my writing routine. It's chord-based interface can be switched quickly over to either a notation window or piano roll, but the chord-based interface is a wonderful tool for setting up and refining your basic chord progression. Auditioning styles is easy to do and, once you've picked one, you can then begin to refine your instrument choices and melody, etc.

In recent months, I have used BiaB to assist me in authoring over thirty tunes and now I'm in the process of giving them a final polish in Sonar. The only drawbacks I've run into so far is many of BiaB's files contain "RealTrack" instrumentation, which are actually audio tracks. If I want to convert one of these files to MIDI so I can bring it into Sonar, BiaB will not always translate the file over completely. Often it's missing instruments that were set up as RealTracks. The work-around to this is a choice: either I can finalize the tune in BiaB, eventually saving it as a 44.1k/16-bit .wav -- or if I want, an mp3 -- or I can bring it into RealBand, which is a DAW that can read the BiaB RealTracks, and finalize the mix there.

I've also taken tunes that I've composed using Sonar and have been able to add instrumentation to them that I generated in BiaB, then exported over to Cakewalk as MIDI.

PG Music's forums are every bit as active as Cakewalk's -- if not more so -- and there are a lot of talented and knowledgeable users there who can help you if you get stuck or encounter a problem. Many of them, I've found, are also Sonar users.
