Lots of dropouts

I just switched from an Apollo USB Twin Duo to an Apollo 8 Thunderbolt.....I am getting a ton of dropouts.

System:
Asus Z170-A, 32 GB RAM, i7 Quad Core at 4.6
Latest chipset, BIOS on MB
Asus ThunderboltEX3 card => Startech TB3 to TB2 adapter => TB2 cable => Apollo
Loaded the most current UA software (9.4), latest TB drivers (17.3.72.250), latest TB firmware
Running ASIO drivers

The problem comes when I add a Soft Synth or change the instrument within the Soft Synth SW.......it's not during actual playback.
I have increased the Buffer Size to crazy numbers and I still get dropouts.  I fired up a session of Acoustica MixCraft7, added 4 Soft Synths with no problems......Cakewalk shows that it is compatible with this interface......

Running Windows 10 Professional, Sonar Platinum 23.6.0 Build 24

Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Jim Roseberry (Sp?) has commented on Thunderbolt interfaces in both the Hardware and Computer sections of the forum.  From what I remember there has to be a certain model only for it to work?  (Jim builds DAW PC systems).
