Recommendations for another DAW?
I started with Cakewalk decades ago and it's the only DAW I've ever used. I'm pure amateur coming back to this on and off, just came back on a couple months ago and now find I should learn another DAW. Any recommendations? (Of course I'm doing my own research but your insights are precious to me.)

Just download the demo's for a few and see which one you like the best. Remember to leave any preconceavedideas or bias's at the door, go in with an open mind, and you'll find something you like, and likely be glad you did. We can all suggest something, but only you can tell which best suits you, which is best for you.

I'm also a very long time Cakewalk user. I've gone to Cubase, because it has many similar features to Cakewalk Sonar . . . especially since I needed solid midi and staff layout views for my workflow. It can be customized to work much like Sonar . . . but I'll also add, there are things about it that really pss me off compared to Sonar. Steep learning curve, it takes some time. So, I find myself going back to Sonar really often, just get things done.
Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

I am 10 years in with Sonar. I've moved to Studio One. The learning curve has been very shallow, to my surprise. So many similarities, and of course you can customise it to make it even more like Sonar if you want. I don't think it would be anything like as hard as you may fear.
Good luck.

As others have said, this is a very individual decision. for me, I absolutely need staff or notation, it's how I compose and edit, orchestrate etc. So that rules out a bunch of DAWS right off the bat, like Studio One or Ableton. Even Cubase does not allow me to have the workflow I need, because you can only select a sequence of notes in the current view; it will not scroll to the right when you hit the edge. This is why it is paramount to demo. Think about how you work. No, you can't expect the exact same workflow, but you want to get as close as possible. This will help you narrow things down to something that will do what you need. For me, it's Reaper. They have a great notation feature, as well as an event list identical to sonar. Although, I'm currently back to working in Sonar, to compare the two. I may stay with Sonar (8.5 Studio) as long as possible, and eventually move to Reaper, or decide that Reaper is better now. Lot's of decisions, and lots of factors to consider!
