Question I just have to ask

This is probably a stupid question - but I will go for it anyway.
Let's say platinum stops working but I have an 8.5. disk.

Will a Platinum bundle open up in 8.5.?

Possible, but if Platinum stopped working in your OS I would venture to say that 8.5 will probably have stopped working too. But who's to say.

But if it did open it may not work nearly a expected even after putting aside that the Platinum may be using PC modules etc. that are not round in 8.5 (of course I knew you knew that).

If I think of it I'll send a small bundle to my son who is still on 8.5 and see what he says.

Just sent a test to my son. Maybe I'll hear back from him tomorrow.

Noel had made mention when AUX tracks were introduced that cwp files were no longer backwards compatible (that spanned the AUX track introduction). I am not sure if that also affects bundles, but seems it would apply to the cwp file inside of it (whether it will extract the wav files would need testing). Up until that point, a cwp would open as much as it could, tell you it was created in a newer version, and let you know what it failed to open.

Doing a "save as" in platinum to a new folder and copying the audio with the project might be a better strategy than using a bundle. Exporting stems would be the safest, since any DAW could use those.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

The short answer is YES!
I bundled up a current project and transferred it across to my W7 lappy which has 8.5, X1, X2, X3 and Splat. The file opened up ok but as bapu said, Some things like Pro Channel setting will be lost

I have empirical evidence this is true... (Bender told me!)

mettelus has the right of it IF (BIG IF) you have the time to export stems of every SONAR Platinum based project before it all goes to hell in handbasket.

If it were me and I were really paranoid I'd start exporting major stems and or tracks now (maybe even somewhat FX'd be it in PC or 3rd pary) so that eventually I'd have that much to essentially recreate as near a mix that existed when Platinum (or all CW SONAR software) went south for good.

But I'm not paranoid as my DAW backup scheme allows me to recover backward up to three weeks in time. One of those weeks would be a "frozen" offline version of a working Platinum that I would never update the OS on again. At that point I'd build a brand new box for all my currently supported and in development DAWs and keep the old box just for Platinum which would then give me more time to do all the exports I may never have gotten around to.

BTW, I'm not paranoid. I just know you should always have a reasonably safe/sane backup plan.

This is good to know.  So let's say I have Platinum on my windows 10 and it no longer works.
I could use my 8.5 disk on a Windows 7 laptop and perhaps still retrieve my bundle files (Perhaps with some glitches).

I would not trust bundle files for long term storage, absolutely not.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

As Mettelus stated above it appears that Aux Tracks and Patch Points are the issue with backwards compatibility.
I ran a quick test and all seems "well" after removing them.
As backup, backup, backup is the only recipe for avoiding digital disaster I am slowing making sure I have multiple
copies of everything; and removing Aux Tracks is at the top of my list of things to do with old projects.
Also, a .mid file for each project to preserve markers and tempo (midi 1; right?) seems a good idea as well.
I haven't saved a .bun file in a very long time; plenty of discussion across the forum on that over the years.
I do not yet live in fear of a Win 10 "meltdown" as I haven't migrated to '10' as yet.
But, my StudioCat, though it runs beautifully, is getting a bit "long in the tooth".

Is windows still updating Windows 7?  It would seem to make sense to have a version of Platinum on a windows 7 computer as an emergency backup as well.

Re: Question I just have to ask 2017/12/29 16:20:19 (permalink)
Because I needed a few of the old plug ins I installed 8.5. On a whim to see what a project would look like I tried to open a CWP and was told the file could not be opened because it was created on a newer version.
So it's almost the same as trying to open on another DAW. I guess CWB files might work, I'll give that a try later. I wonder what will happen if  I tried X3? That's my back up plan. I will switch DAws before I would go back as far as 8.5. X3e would be half way there and I would use it along side Cubase.

If only CWB files are backward compatable then I guess it would be wise to back up all our projects that way as we move along. Only takes a second. I save all my projects as midi as well.

Just make an offline authorization and pull the lap top or desktop offline.
you probably wont even need to pull it offline. I say that incase you get a virus and need to reformat.
That's when you'll be screwed.
