Since new Windows Sonar won't load
Hi I upgraded to new Windows and since then, when I fire up Sonar I get the Following: - A pop up says: Installing Steinberg USB driver then... - A Second pop up says: Preparing to Install... It stays frozen like this and nothing happens... Is that it? Sonar has been killed by new Windows upgrade? Please help me

You upgraded to what version of Windows? Try turning off the hardware (?) associated with "Steinberg USB driver". If that progresses you further perhaps an uninstall and reinstall of the latest driver will sort it.

Cool so what does that USB driver belong to? Hardware?
Try turning it off all the hardware before starting Sonar, if it starts attempt to see what hardware is interfering (Steinberg?)
Or you have other DAW's installed such as Cubase?

Windows didn't kill SONAR, and wouldn't be installing a vendor-specific device driver. Do you have a Steinberg audio interface? Where you using that driver before? Try going into Device Manager and disabling it. Then, assuming SONAR starts up, select the driver you were using beforehand. It should still be there.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

There was a previous report just like this one. The problem was the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver. The fix was uninstalling and assuming you have a Steinberg interface re-installing the driver.

Everybodys been demoing Cubase and finding out about the little driver they have that will install with the software if you let it. You don't have to install it, they give you the option while installing the software, at least on the paid version you do. Think of it as asio4all. Some have issue with that too. Stienberg interfaces come with proper ASIO drivers that is a different thing. You need those. The generic ASIO driver is because Stienberg figures a lot of people don't have interfaces so is giving them a quick fix with asio4all. I should't really cause issues. I had it on one of mine for a long time and just ignored it's existance. I thought at the time you needed it to run Cubase in ASIO until I googled it.

I do not believe Generic Low Latency Driver supplied with Cubase identifies as a USB driver. The USB driver is the ASIO driver supplied with Steinberg interfaces. Previous reports referred to UR22 and UR44 interfaces. The problem is not SONAR specific. I recently saw the same report on the VCV Rack Wiki and FB pages.

I just installed my copy of Cubase Elements 7 to my DAW after I re built it. You'll see the option to install the generic driver at a certain point in the install. Possibley they also include it with the interfaces. We'll see what the OP say's he has I guess. It should be harmless just the same as we could use WASAPI. I certainly didn't bother my system. It was not an option in Sonar, only Cubase. Where it was anouying is everytime I started Cubase it would default to that driver. But Wave Lab seems OK.

Win 1709 has killed my Sonar too - i get "mfc140u.dll missing, VCRUNTIME140.dll missing , CONCRT140.dll missing". I don't have a steinberg driver. I "updated" Windows to 1709 on 28th December, then tried to load Sonar only today after my holiday. I tried to uninstall the update, but discovered it had deleted the old files (hah- Microsoft didn't tell me that when I "upgraded") - AND it doesn't recognize the Restore files that I used to make religiously so I can't do a hard drive image restore. Why do these people come up with these ideas? I can either re-install Sonar or use the system restore disc from the previous version of Win 10 - what would be the better option? zblip2@gmail.com Hi I upgraded to new Windows and since then, when I fire up Sonar I get the Following: - A pop up says: Installing Steinberg USB driver then... - A Second pop up says: Preparing to Install... Your issue is completely different I would create a brand new thread as you risk hijacking the OP's thread. Anyway these are missing Visual C runtime libraries, generally the first thing to do here is run Windows Update several times (over and over again, rebooting etc) until it's all installed. Otherwise a Sonar reinstall might reinstall the libraries for you, worst case scenario is to download the libraries from MS and install. EDIT. Since I posted this he's created a new thread: http://forum.cakewalk.com...spx?m=3718731&fp=1
