Adjusting Velocity In Home Studio

I'm continuing to work in Sonar Home Studio, and, not being fluent in PRV, I'm having some problems changing velocities. I prefer doing this in Event List. For example, let's say I have a musical phrase extending over several measures. most of the notes sound fine at V=80, but a few are too loud or too soft. In Event List (EL), I select all the notes, call up Note proprieties, and change them to 80, with one click. Then I go to Staff View and change the problem notes one by one.

In PRV, I have not found an easy way to do this. There doesn't seem to be a quick way to change them all to 80. I know about the controller events. But there's multiple events listed even when I have one inst. selected, each with its own channel number. This is visually confusing and very hard on my eyes. I can find the right one, based on channel number, but then other issues happen. for example, I like to put in initial CC events of 7=80, 100, or whatnot. Then I use CC11 for fine adjustments. But in PRV, my CC7 values don't extend all the way to the end of the piece. They just end somewhere. Shouldn't they go all the way to the end?

There are other things, but that's enough for now. Thanks in advance,

Mike

Very , very easy,
Use the smart tool. Click on section A of the note blob as shown below

You'll get this tool

Make sure you have the velocity pane open at the bottom so you can see what's happening. Notice the little info text that will tell you what the velocity of the selcted note is. As you move the cursor up or down it will change the value.
It you want to set say a Kick drum to all notes at 112.
Highlight all the kick drum note buy clicking the piano note on the left. All the notes will go dark.
Now pick any of the highlighted notes and use the velocity tool to raise them all to max. Let go. Now grab them again and lower them down to 112.

You can also do little groups of notes by lassoing them with a right mouse.
What your best plan should be right now is to read all you can in the Documentation about both the smart tool and PRV. It is HUGE what you can do now. You'll soon find yourself using only the PRV and the mouse to do almost every imaginable task to edit midi.  It is one reason I'm not about to change DAW's. None I have tried match Sonars PRV editing for midi. And I basically live in the PRV these days as I'm focused on backing tracks right now.

Not sure why they choose to not have a Event list but you soon find you don't need it.

Another way to set the velocity range for a track or clip is the Velocity MFX

FYI, the first image above comes from this page.
Another way in the PRV is lasso the velocities in the controller pane and then drag one of them to the appropriate value.

Cactus and scook, you guys are just the best. I know these are elementary questions, I'm almost embarrassed to ask. I'm not new to Sonar, but I am new to PRV. Thanks for taking the time for such great answers. I'll try your suggestion soon. I'm hopeful things will work out.

I used to use the velocity plugin, scook. But I always saw it as setting the velocity for the whole piece. Can it handle changes?

MFX plug-ins operate on a track or clip. The Velocity MFX may be used to set ceiling and floor values.

Don't feel that any question is not worth asking. That's what this forum is for and hopefully will always be.
I use both the Documentation and this forum equally. But it's often hard to find the exact thing your wanting in the documentation help files. I use Google because it seems to work better than the search function that is built in.

And one thing for sure with Sonar, there is most always more than one way to do the same thing.
Honesty it's taken me 10 years or more to learn how to use the PRV. I'm still learning.

Thanks Johnny. Ok, great, I just figured out how to select and change velocities for a group of notes. I think I'm on my way. Now on to those CC events.

This really is good for my brain, I need the challenge at this point in life! For years I used Event List, now I will use PRV. Seems foreign at first, but once I get the hang of it I may never look back.
