I just can't get past my dislike for the $200+ upgrade price for use Suite users. Cubase crossgrade was less. Samplitude license and Reason 10 upgrade is less. I'll be sitting on 9 Suite for some time unless I get a good deal from a vendor. FL Studio 20 will be out soon and that wont cost me a thing. As for Max4Live the only value in that is getting devices made for it. Most likely you wouldn't spend your time learning to create with it. That would be my most expensive DAW upgrade ever unless I upgraded to Cubase without a discount.

I agree with kitekrazy... I am not going to spend $200 to upgrade my Suite 9... that's way overpriced. I rarely touch Live anymore since I discovered Reaper (which BTW has a great $29 add-on that emulates much of Live's session view). And considering that there really doesn't seem to be much of anything new in Live 10... who cares if Max4Live is built-in? That's not worth $200. So I think I will wait till Live 11 hits and see if that has anything of interest.

Luckily my Focusrite interface came with a stripped down version that I could update for reasonable value. Ableton do free feature updates over the version lifecycle don't they? If so what were version 9's like?

haha you spotted my gas digging for reasons to buy! i'm also of the "200??" camp, and i'd also have to do some hard disk management to take full advantage of the full library, although i expect there's some overlap with v9 lib?

It appears that Live 10 comes with a few more instruments and effects. I qualified for a free move to Live 10 standard since I recently bought live 9. If Max comes with standard that's a real plus. I recently seena cool composer program that needed Max to run. I see no need to upgrade to suite since I have some decent effects and instruments from 3rd parties. 10 has upgraded midi editing capability. Something many will welcome. If set up correctly you can likely use the instruments/effects areas much like the Pro Channel in Sonar in combining the factory content with your own plugins. Probably my biggest gripe so far has been integration with the QuNEO controller. The templates software can't find the right file tree when using the Keith McMillin installer. I can't find it manually so I have to create my own. Ableton never included the QuNEO in their controller list. I had hopes maybe version 10 includes it. Presently to use OuNEO you need to make a work around unless you like the factory defaults. My 5 year old Oxygen V2 works great in Ableton though.

Look for user 2:43AM (Tony; http://forum.cakewalk.com/Profile/78182/). He's a beta tester. I have the suspicion that he's underwhelmed. To quote a bit of his PM to me: "boy is it not that significant of an upgrade!"

I see this two ways. One way says we need lots of improvements and extras. The other way says if you have a good thing don't tamper with it much. Too many additions and the software is called bloated. Ableton seem to be following a similar line to Reason in keeping the program core the same. Although there do appear to be a lot of new additions to 10. Probably more useful to the person who only stays in Ableton 10.

I have ABLETON 8, never went to 9 as I was happy with SONAR at the time. During all the panic I went and stumped for STUDIO ONE v3 .. in a bit of a rush TBH. After I was thinking, for less I could have upgraded to Live 9 and get the 10 for free ( Standard ).
Im sort of regretting the S1 purchase now as I really am not using it much.
So Im just wondering and considering. How would people balance S1 to Live 9/10? Im thinking of flogging my S1 License before the Ableton offer goes shortly OR should I stick with S1? Thoughts appreciated? Keep in mind I have Live 8 .. not 9/10 yet ..

I would have them both if I could. They both have strengths the other doesn't have. Much of it depends on you and how you work. I was also happy with Sonar. I seem to have happened into some of this. In the case of Studio One. I bought one of their interfaces a long time ago which had a copy of artist in the deal. I was signed up to their email specials. That software just sat and gathered dust until I seen a special deal and upgraded. From then on it was easier to upgrade. I kept upgrading it even though I didn't use it as much as Sonar. A similar thing happened with Ableton. Version 4 was a great deal and I had it. Also sat on a shelf gathering dust until I needed to do some live work and seen Ableton had a deal going. For probably a third or less of the retail price I was able to upgrade each one...so I figure why not? Ableton is mainly used by loopers and DJ's in what they call the session view. There must be 100 controllers that you can buy to use with session view. I mostly DON'T use the session view. I use tracks view much like a traditional daw. The nice thing about Ableton is you can do that. It is probably the easiest daw there is to map midi to. Push one button and map..simple. In that sense I'm probably not the typical Ableton user. The other real asset to Ableton is the warping features. If you do a lot of key changes and pitch changes it would pay to look into warping.Still feels odd compared to Sonar. When I seriously compose acoustic instruments I use Sonar or Studio One. Then I might put those tracks into Ableton.

Thanks Starise. While I am traditionally a guitarist, in recent years I have been doing alot of ambient and instrumental stuff with soft synths and samples. I am a huge Tangerine Dream, Jarre, Sylvian, Vangelis, Yello type fan :D .. love retro synths from 70s, 80s so use the ARTURIA stuff alot. I have ALL my software on a decent laptop with a small 32 key M-Audio keyboard and a wireless set of headphones. I love the portability of that. Sonar since the 90s did me just fine. Dabbled with Live 8. However now I have Studio 1 unused. I also bought Samplitude ridiculous deal with Vegas and Soundforge included. And then even more ridiculous, I bought TRACKTION Waveform Ultimate for less than $50. So I am well DAWed up :D Outside of Sonar I quiet like Tracktion actually. So that gives you an idea what I use a DAWs for ... And whether I should as you said, keep both Studio One while upgrading to Live 9/10 or doing the latter while flogging S1. The FREE 10 upgrade is the main thing that is attractive me thinks.

they're really quite different beasts, so go with the one you currently use the most, there will always be other/upgrade opportunities in the future

I'd say keep both. I have an old full copy of Ableton Live 5, that I just didn't use enough to keep up with the upgrades. Had Acid, Project 5, and Sonar at the time. Ableton is very cool however, in that they will still let me upgrade from Live 5 to the latest full version for a modest fee of $159. Last year I picked up a keyboard that came with a copy of Live Lite 9, and have been playing around with that. If I use that enough I may consider jumping on the upgrade. Although it can be, and is used by some as their main kit, for me I would put Live in the category of secondary DAWs. I think that it is useful as a creativity tool, or idea generator. For that I also have Tracktion Waveform and a few other things. My thinking is that one can never have too many toys, or DAWs... But it probably is good to be familiar with one main general DAW for use as your project studio, and I would consider programs such as these up to that task: Sonar, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, Pro Tools, or Logic. By this definition, they would be fully featured, and not specialize in a narrow use case, such as live performance, loop based music, or audio stretching, etc. Not that you don't want that, but you probably need one DAW that can do it all, or at least most of it, when it comes time to complete a project. Choose one main DAW, then get as many others as you have time to learn. I believe it is good to know more than one, as some can do things more easily then others. Hopefully you can find a workflow that suits you.
