Bug/unfinished feature: Freezed instrument track: clip gain not available

The next Cakewalk owner, check this out.

Steps:
- Freeze instrument track
- Open Smart Tool and try to adjust frozen audio clip gain

Expected:
- Smart tool should open menu items for audio clip

But:
- Smart tool opens menu items for MIDI.

Hello Panup,

What software version of Sonar do you use?  What computer operating system, 32 or 64 bit and how much ram is the program operating on?

Cakewalk is running with a skeleton crew.  Moderators or other users may be able to help but impossible to know without more information.  The more information you provide the better your chances are of seeing a successful resolution.

With the additional information, at least others can duplicate and verify the issue.

I use the latest official SPLAT build 10.2017, x64, 32 GB RAM.
Simple intrument track, in my case Native Instruments Absynth 5 (latest version).

---
Workaround #1: Track volume envelope.
Workaround #2: Copy frozen audio to a new track. Then it's possible to add clip gain envelope.

Here's the recipe, verified on my secondary PC:

- Create new project, Basic template.
- Create instrument track, Cakewlk TTS-1.
- Add some notes in piano roll view.
- Click Freeze button.
- Open Smart Tool by pressing T over the frozen clip.
- Select Clip | Clip automation.

There is "Velocity" which is used for MIDI but no "Gain" for audio.

- Copy clip to new track.
- Now there is Gain and Pan in Clip | Clip automation submenu.

Issue:
SONAR does not update Clip automation menuitems to match track data type (MIDI vs audio).

Version:
SPLAT 2017.10 x64

SONAR source code will not be deleted during "transition period". Thus it's technically not impossible for the new owner ("new" because there is currently a transition period going on and ownership of Cakewalk's assets is transferred somewhere) to start fixing bugs... :)

source code never gets thrown away, or at least only ever by idiots, and given that the sonar source code is cakewalk's main asset...

Is that not too "risky" operation ? Once the track is unfrozen, all these clips and envelopes are void...

Actually it's Gibson's, and so far Gibson has shown it doesn't really understand software. If the software gets split up or abandoned (all possibilities) then it's as good as trash.

In theory, yes, but there are situations where user [me] knows knows that the track will not be unfrozen. For example, when finishing the final mix before exporting the premaster, everything might be ready but you need to drop gain from some part of the song on a frozen track. Track volume automation is one alternative, clip fx is another, but splitting frozen track and applying clip gain is the most straightforward option, at least in my opinion.

Thanks for the explanation.

Check for Pre-FX volume automation and warning when unfreezing is going to delete some changes... in case you consider to change the DAW

I find this a pain as well.

I'd love to be able to freeze just the synth part of an instrument track (almost like an internal bounce-to-clip), but continue to use effects & pro-channel.

The only workaround I've found vaguely acceptable is to create a separate bus for each instrument and only use effects/pro-channel on the bus.

However this then makes using my Mackie Control totally useless as it only controls tracks and not busses.

It's a real pity there's no-one left at Cakewalk to improve this.

"Real" Mackie Control can switch to buses. You probably have "Mackie compatible" device if you can not.

With modern Sonar you can try to use AUX tracks instead of buses for the purpose.

I've not tried it on my real Mackie Control yet... my studio is freezing this time of year!

Good to know it's there though, so thanks for that.
