    Sadly the water spraying on him is just a CGI effect. What we are seeing is a Rat trying to get whatever is on him off, without much success.

    Not true, there are many videos of rats taking baths and they do wash themselves like that.

    New York rats don't shower, they climb through pipes and into your toilet and take a bath.

    Quite honestly I've seen more mice in my building than rats. I've had a few run out of my closet and disappear into the radiator. Cute little critters. I've caught a few in tupperware boxes and taken them outside. Can't kill the little beggars, mice are super intelligent and trainable so I don't consider them vermin.

    If nothing else, my little ones all loved that video (all 3x)......the Mrs. however, hates rats and can't even watch it on TV or see pics of them.

    I guess we can set aside the issue of it not actually being a rat, and focus on whether it's "distressed" or not. If you go on rat forums (yep I went there) it seems that bathing rats with rat shampoo is quite common in the rat community (yep I went there), and if you look at other videos of rats being bathed in soap, they make similar washing motions as the creature in that video albeit mainly concentrated on the head and upper body. Then again, these other videos show rats soaped up in a basin of water - maybe they'd do the same thing if they were out of the water and completely covered in soap? 
     
    So I guess the pertinent question is "is that pet shampoo"?
