my phone (sony xperia xz) is usb-c but wouldn't work with a generic cable, had to get a sony-branded one, grrrrr

I had one of the exploding Note 7s. Well, two of them. They took the second one back, as well. That was USB-C. It was nice not having to think about which side was up. They downgraded me to a 7 Edge, with its too-abrupt edge and old USB connector.

Craig is a ray of optimism in a frustrating world of proprietary gotchas. If we ever really do settle on a truly universal connection standard, it'll be thanks to Android. Left to their own devices, Apple would have happily leveraged planned obsolescence to coerce us into endless annual buying cycles at ever-ratcheting prices.

Bitflipper, I agree with your sentiment about Apple's expensive and proprietary hardware philosophy.
But, Android had little, if nothing to do with creating Thunderbolt.
And although Apple keeps pushing its Firewire standard like Betamax... Apple did consult with Intel in the making of Thunderbolt while Google has no honorable mention in the creation thereof.
Google, "who created thunderbolt?".
"After close technical collaboration between Intel and Apple, Thunderbolt emerged from the lab to make its first appearance in MacBook Pro. Intel co-invented USB and PCI Express, which have become widely adopted technologies for data transfer. Apple invented FireWire and was instrumental in popularizing USB".
Eventually the latest gen thunderbolt cables will become so cheap that you will be able to pick them up at the dollar store or buy a ten pack on Amazon for under ten bucks.
I credit Intel and not Apple or Google for this.
The latest Samsung Google Android phone is being priced at 1,200+ dollars.

of course it's money - if you introduce even just a small proprietary change to the "universal" standard/design then users have to stick with your proprietary stuff and can't just use a generic/universal equivalent - it's known as "business" - apple are the classic example /hth
