Help! RME Firewire Issues...
Hi guys, maybe someone here has the insight to solve this - RME isn't helping.. My UFX lost it's USB port a few years ago. The Firewire 400 port still works perfectly... on TWO of my Three PCs...
My Windows 10 Pro x64 machine in the studio stopped seeing the unit a few weeks ago, although the FW LED on the front of the UFX glows as it should, showing connectivity. I reinstalled the driver but it just won't reinstall - it won't go beyond the C++ install bar and never gets to the RME logo Install screen.. However, the EXACT same cable, exact same driver will work on my Windows 10 Home X64 i5 office PC running a Sunnix FW card and it works on my Lenovo Win 7 laptop from yesteryear running a Sunnix external FW card. RME's solution is to get me to send the unit to Germany for a quick service... soon as I sell both my kidneys for the shipping of course..
Anyone have an idea here? It would really be appreciated. Best, Ludwig South Africa.

Jump into device manager and make sure there are no yellow question marks. In other words, make sure the device works.

I think your problem has been shown to be machine specific.

You don't mention whether your studio machine is using onboard or PCI/PCIe Firewire... In any case, have you tried transplanting the working Sunnix FW card from your i5 system to your studio system?

Unfortunately my studio machine (Intel i7 MB) has a breakout cable to FW from the motherboard. Only one PCI slot already occupied by my internal RME card. It's the next test to do, but still, it makes no sense that 2 out of three machines are happy with this device.

I have seen many threads about incompatibility in particular combinations of FW controller, FW device and Windows. I mean even between major Windows 10 updates. Have you tried to remove not only RME but also FW controller driver from the device manager? Also try to Google about exact motherboard model and FW driver, can be there are some special tweaks/older drivers with which it still can work.

To add to azslow3, if you uninstall the device in device manager and restart the computer, windows will reinstall the device.

In Device Manager, you can right-click and uninstall the Firewire controller... then go to the Action Menu and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. The Firewire controller will be reinstalled. If you don't see the Firewire controller listed in Device Manager (under 1394 Bus Host Controllers), it's the culprit. BTW, You can add a nice PCIe TI Chipset Firewire controller for ~$25 US... (if the onboard controller is flaky, it's easy and inexpensive to resolve).

Thanks guys, I'll try all the above as soon as I get a chance - studio is quite busy at the moment. My mobo only has one PCI slot so I'll have to uninstall my HDSP9652 card - always risky as it's a finicky thing. I'll report back as I go. Thanks for all the input! Ludwig
