This reminds me of someone I know who refuses to mix his music in stereo. His belief is that if you mix music in stereo, when it's broadcast from a stereo radio station it would become TOO stereo; everything would be too wide aurally. I couldn't convince him that that's NOT how stereo radio stations work. To this day he still mixes everything in mono (and still hasn't gotten on the radio).

So true. Then the electric bass was invented to point out how inadequate your speakers were, coercing further purchases. I can't be certain, but have suspicions that the cowbell may also be part of the conspiracy.
