how does bandlab make money?

the only thing i can find on the site that has a pricetag is the hardware, all the service stuff is tagged as free, so i was wondering how bandlab will make money?
even the faq page for "is it really free?" says "Absolutely. It’s free for anyone and everyone— we won’t be surprising you with tiered pricing plans, trials or limited usage."
so how will this business make money? i realise it's currently still a startup, and the bloomberg article said they're funded 'til 2019, but what then?

I think Bandlab is like any web startup.  Step 1 is to get funding, Step 2 is to get as many users as possible, and then Step 3 varies.  It could be advertising or just selling the company in whole or parts.  In "our" case it might be acquiring Sonar and selling it in the same way Cakewalk/Roland/Gibson did.  I see a lot of talk on here about Sonar and the current online free Bandlab DAW being merged.  I cannot imagine that is their plan.  Sure, put a little of Bandlab into Sonar and a little of Sonar into Bandlab but there is no way they are going to create one product from the two and abandon potential paying Sonar subscribers or try to forklift all of their free users into the paying-for-Sonar category.

If this purchase does not work out for Bandlab then they will sell Cakewalk/Sonar to someone else.

From Bloomberg:

"BandLab isn't Kuok’s only musical endeavor. He's also turning Swee Lee, a sleepy 70-year-old distributor of guitar and audio equipment in Singapore, into a modern enterprise, selling merchandise online and offering music lessons. It's now the biggest distributor of instruments and audio equipment in Southeast Asia, with shops in Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam. Sales have doubled since he bought the company in 2012."

He's also resurrecting Harmony Guitars, owns a piece of Rolling Stone, and bought MONO Creators, who make high-end instruments cases, straps, and accessories. Seems to me BandLab is intended to be the destination site/billboard/gathering place that will lead to other endeavors that make considerable money. In other words I don't think its role is to be a profit center, but a marketing expense - and one which I think could be very cost-effective compared to traditional advertising and marketing. The more people BandLab attracts, the wider the message will be disseminated.

Again, this is speculation on my part but it seems logical enough.

There is a Billing section in the BandLab profile settings where you set up your method of payment for all of the free stuff

Band lab has a method to give tips and get payments. I imagine they may make something from those transactions. Other than that it is a valuable platform for the owner. Think back to before Facebook had any advertising and the huge losses it made, then look at it now. Same with Youtube. Grow it big then get the money rolling in.

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Depends what the plan is if its to come on board and offer mixing mastering tools for free then advertise for free. Then I guess they would want a membership fee. The mixing mastering market then would be owned by Bandlab.

You got my hopes up then, but no shops in Vietnam. Looks like Bloomsberg got some wrong there.

The best shop and dealer in HCMC for Korg said they could get me the Nanopad and that it would take 8 months. Trying to buy an SM57 from shops stocking Shure was impossible.

@Kamikaze actually we do have a store in Ho Chi Minh, you have to Choose Country - Vietnam or: https://www.facebook.com/SweeLeeVietnam/

However I'm afraid we don't stock Korg, we represent quite a lot of other different and alternative brands though and if you browse our Singapore website you'll see a much larger selection of all the brands we carry and our support team replies extremely quickly :-)

Fun fact: we use to be the distributor for Cakewalk!

Ahh you are all the way down there. Actually just arrund the corner from my Friends house (The Tavern Pub - worth trying if you ever fancy a pint and yuo are at the store). I stayed there last June on route to the UK. Id never ventured into Korea Town and felt totally lost in a City I'd lived in for 2 years and thought I knew well.

When  visited your site earlier today I saw the 'select your country' option, but none of the three flags are Vietnam. The globe icon didn't take me to an option to select a country. Maybe I'm missing something, I'm good at that.

The best way to make money is to start a free service, get lotsa users, make a lot of positive noise, then IPO reserving the majority of the stock for yourself.  Sell before anybody realizes you can't make money

You are absolutely right, Craig. I am looking for future of Sonar in more and more brighter colors. Don't remember if anyone from Gibson ever put anything on forum not mentioning words for welcome or leaving... They didn't care about Sonar or us. Just like they abandoned toy they bored of. Well, I wonder if anyone from Roland put any welcome or bye words here?

For this I have big respect for them. And it is promising Meng seems to be really excited. Not just like invest in something what could return investment one day but like in something he is happy to be part of...

Meng only took over last week and has posted loads of information so far. I think they need some time to get sorted and make a new version of the DAW available but that could be a few months away.

So let's just sit back and relax and give the man a chance to shine.

I am sure Noel had loads of new features under test plus bug fixes. Many people left so he has to get a team back together again.

I can see Momentum back on the scene also perhaps as part of the new software. Maybe that will be the new name???

Of course :) Sorry for lack of clarity, I was sort of commenting on the poster above me, and should have put an @BobF in there. That being said, I think it is also an reply on your initial question. Maybe the BandLab app, is generating demand for the Link Analog devices ... even though the app in itself is free etc. etc. Maybe the missing link between hardware and software will be made. As somebody in here pointed out, it's tough on the DAW market after Apple started giving away Logic and Garageband for next to nothing. I don't wan't to speculate anymore, I have to good of an imagination.

I'm a little worried because the only product I see on the Bandlab site is a smartphone app.  I hope they offer more than that!  The day that I have to start making music on a little smartphone or tablet is the day I'm done with it.  I will NOT create music on something that tiny.  Sorry.

@Johnbee58 It has been confirmed elsewhere that the successor to Sonar will be a desktop app, my guess is that it will be very similar to what we have today. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it's just 1 week since the announcement of the takeover of IP. I guess the ink isn't still dry on all the papers that needs to be signed.

My post was a bit of tongue-n-cheekery, but having things for sale doesn't necessarily = making money

With the recent update this is getting real.  I hope they pull this off with great success.
