Sonar Pro 2017 Steam version, Win10 x64 - intermittent audio dropouts with no error

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I reinstalled Sonar along with all my other software upon upgrading to a new Windows 10 machine, but I'm having an odd issue. The audio will completely drop on playback many times during a track, but the usual "The audio engine has stopped unexpectedly" error doesn't come up, and playback resumes maybe half a second later.

I've tried this on a few different audio interfaces I had available with the same thing happening each time. I have tried changing the driver mode to every available option and still the problem persists, and I've altered buffers and so on with equally no effect. I also deleted AUD.INI as suggested from a search, but that also did nothing.

The dropouts are not always at the same time in the project (even when replaying the same one; sometimes it'll drop at 5 seconds, sometimes at 9 seconds, etc.) and they are not at an evenly spaced interval either, but otherwise the behaviour is quite similar to plugins that periodically insert silence when in demo mode, except every track goes quiet. The problem also occurs if you try to export the track; there will be short periods of complete silence in the resulting audio file. As such the software is basically crippled for me at the moment.

This problem seems to be unique to Sonar as other DAW's I've tried (Reason 10, FL Studio 12, Samplitude Pro X3, Acid Pro 7...) work perfectly with the same drivers. I have tested for issues with DPC Latency Checker and LatencyMon but neither reports any problems. I would move over to a new DAW and had been planning to with the apparent demise of Cakewalk (though it looks like Sonar may be saved?) but I have a number of incomplete projects that would be a pain to recreate in another software and I'd like to finish them in Sonar if I can.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to finish my existing projects and I'd like to be able to keep using Sonar as I'm used to the workflow. I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar problem through Google searches, so I hoped someone on these forums might have an idea as to what's wrong.

Regards,

From my personal experience If you upgraded to Windows 10, then you can't use old songs and templates from Windows 7 or other because they are not 100% compatible. You have to start fresh in Windows 10 in the Sonar programs and templates. And if you're using CA2A plugin, make sure it's registered as unregistered CA2A will cause dropouts.

It least that's what fixed my dropout issues when I upgraded to Windows 10.

Hi, and welcome to this forum.
My guess is that it is a plugin in demo mode as kday says.
If you open the project in safe mode (hold down Shift while opening, and say no to all) and play it, does the same happen?
    All the best.

Thanks for the advice! I've tried opening projects in safe mode as suggested and they seem to play fine, so I think we've identified the problem -- of course, the hard part now is going through all the relevant plugins to see which one is causing the issue.

The old projects from Win7 are fine (if without FX, and such) when opened in safe mode, and I tried making a new project from scratch and that didn't have any problems either.

Time to go hunting for that misbehaving plugin, I suppose...
