Sonar X3 Producer and XLN Addictive drums.
When using AD in a Sonar project, I seem to have a problem getting the sound in the Sonar track. When I click in AD I get sound and the Sonar track meter lights up and moves up & down. But when I play the track in Sonar, the track meter lights up and moves but I get no sound. What might I have done wrong or not done? Also, how can I get to have each instruments on it's own track? ei...kick..snare..hi-hat...toms..all on their own separate track. Thank you in advance for your precious help. regards Gerry

This knowledge base article has a zip file containing a drum map and templates that may help.I just realized this may be about the original AD and the article is for AD2.

Because AD2 has it's own mixer there's actually not much of a need to use separate tracks. I find I can dial in any sound I want using the effects supplied. And an important art of AD2 sound is learning to use the mike options. Like the Room and Overheads. Example, turning down the overheads on the snare totally changes the way it sounds. Before you separate the tracks, which can be done using the Insert synth dialog, try to work with it's GUI mixer first. I use separate midi tracks and not the simple instrument track. I have a tutorial on setting up Sonar for midi you might find helps simplify this. http://www.cactusmusic.ca/Sonarmidi.htm

I see your point Cactus Music. If you can do the editing in AD, why have it duplicated in Sonar. Never thought that way. But my main problem is that I cannot get the sound to come out of my Sonar track. Everything works fine in AD and the meters work in Sonar track, but no sound????? Regards Thank you Gerry

Hi Greg. In Sonar, the input is set to the AD individual instrument and the output is set to Master. And I do not see how I could change that. Everything seems to work fine..allocation of instruments to tracks...meters lighting up on the Sonar track when clicking in AD etc. But when I click and drag an Ad clip in Sonar ...no Sonar sound. Thank you for any help. Regards Gerry

That's why I pointed you at my tutorial. Or just read the Sonar local documentation which you can search. The information you need is already there if you take the time to read. You are looking for the basic- how to set up a midi tack to play a VST instrument.

It is not with the Sonar VST or SI Instruments that I have an issue, it seems to be with third party VST's...NI Kontakt 5, XLN Addictive drums etc..etc..etc.. Gerry

It doesn't matter whether it's a Sonar-owned instrument or a 3rd party, the routing setup (and troubleshooting) are the same.

If you follow this, you should have no issues... the key here is the track and/or project templates. Setting up a Drum Map for Addictive Drums 2 in SONAR https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013364/Setting-up-a-Drum-Map-for-Addictive-Drums-2-in-SONAR
- In SONAR, go to Insert > Track Template…
- Double-click the Soft Synth Track Templates folder
- In your list of templates, choose “AD2 Track” and click Open
- After a moment, 15 tracks will be added to your project
- Be sure that the output of the associated MIDI Track is set to DM1
- If necessary, go to Edit > Preferences > MIDI | Drum Map Manager and load the “AD2 Standard” map preset to DM1
Track 15 is your MIDI track, which you can use to input the MIDI data for Addictive Drums 2. You can also insert any beat directly from Addictive Drums 2 onto track 15 by clicking the “Beats” tab in the upper-right corner of Addictive Drums 2, highlighting any beat and dragging it to Track 15. The first track is a Master Track, which outputs all the sound from Addictive Drums 2 onto one stereo track. Most of the subsequent tracks are mono outputs for each individual drum from Addictive Drums 2, allowing you to process the audio from each drum kit piece individually. For convenience, the Overhead, Room, and Bus tracks are all formatted as stereo as well (as indicated by (ST) on the respective tracks. Note that processing in SONAR on any of these tracks will not affect how the AD2 Master (ST) track will sound; only processing within Addictive Drums 2 will affect the way this track sounds. This provides for lots of versatility, as you can use this track for things like parallel processing, having a dry track to compare to, or even having it muted altogether so you can monitor the individual kit pieces only.

I linked to that in msg #2 above but if the user has the original AD which was bundled with X3 before AD2 was released, the templates will not help.
