DEP on PC - Disabling via BIOS vs. OS

Anybody happen to know if disabling Intel XD Technology inside the motherboard BIOS is the same thing as disabling DEP in Windows (turning it off via boot.ini) ??    i tried disabling Intel XD setting in the BIOS but Windows still shows DEP as configurable instead of being greyed out.   Whereas if I turn off DEP in the boot.ini file it greys out the DEP options in Windows as expected.   I always thought by disabling the DEP processor support (the Intel XD BIOS setting) it would disable DEP inside Windows.  However that's not what is being visually reflected.  Now I'm not sure what to believe....
