Plug in to use while manually adjusting vocal gain

Hey all, I am looking for a plugin that I can use to scan a section of a vocal track and give me the RMS of the section.

I am manually gain editing the vocal track (boosting and cutting) words that are either getting lost and or too loud. I know this is looked at as a job for the compressors, or automation and I intend to use those tools but right now I am taking care of problems I can see or hear before hand so I don't have to be as heavy handed o with processing.

Back in the day Sound Forge had a tool that you could analyze a section and it would give you the RMS, that would be so handy for this kind of thing. Is there something Cakewalk already has that I am missing?

I would argue that the best tool for this job is your ears. There are many sounds (sibilance especially) that are too loud despite having low amplitude. And sometimes (less often) the opposite is true.

You wrote that you are gain editing the track. This is a job for the clip automation gain. It is very easy to use. With the edit filter set to clip automation gain, drag the smart tool across the lower half of the clip to select the portion you want to change. SONAR will create the nodes for you. Then just place the cursor above the envelope line and it will change to the volume tool for you to raise or lower the volume of the selection.

Wave Lab has a Global Analyzer that does what your asking. But I don't use it on tracks, just full mixes.

I can tool copy the track into Wave Lab. I often do this to vocal tracks where there were re takes and the singer moved around, so each take is a different level. Also, as you say, a lot of singers lose power on say, lower notes so they need a little boost.

I can use my ears ( and eyes)  for most of this and the end result is a much improved vocal track that you can understand each word.
