How does Cakewalk x64 find and use 32/64 VSTs?

I recently switched to Cakewalk x64 after being a long-time SONAR x32 user.
I have many 32-bit VSTs and in most cases, I also have the 64-bit version of same.

My question is, for existing projects, how does Cakewalk decide which VST to load? Does it intelligently use the 64-bit one, now that I'm opening the project in x64? It doesn't seem to.

Is this because, though my VST Folder list includes both C:\VST32 and C:\VST64, the \VST32 is first in the list? Does the order of the folders make a difference?

Is there a way of finding out which plugins are being used in an open project? Specifically, which .dll (32 or 64) is used?

For example, I've used GSI VB3 (32-bit). It's in my projects. I've installed both .dlls in my VST directories. I *think* that Cakewalk is still using the 32-bit version, but I'm not sure. The Plugin Manager only shows one instance of VB3, the C:\VST32  one.

I feel like there should be an FAQ that covers all this, so please direct me there... Otherwise, thank you for your patience and please advise me if you can.

Thanks,

In my case my lone 32 bit plug is highlighted orange in the list and have a 32 in brackets.

Depends on the plug-in manufacturer. Some identify their 32 and 64 bit plug-ins in a way that let a DAW swap them as needed. Some manufacturers identify their 32 and 64 bit as different plug-ins. These cannot be interchanged by the host.

32 bit VST plug-ins are hosted by a bridge and lack the Cakewalk VST header on the plug-in UI. To see the standard header for a 32bit VST hold the ALT key while opening the plug-in UI. The header usually opens behind the plug-in UI. Here is a 32bit VST showing the standard header is a separate window above the plug-in UI and a 64bit VST with the standard header.

Scook, you are a gem among men (presumably).
I noticed the strange header on the plugin UIs and wondered what was going on.
Thanks.

Also, the VB3 issue turned out to be my fault. I'd put the .dll in C:\, instead of C:\VST64. Yup. I did that.

Couple of notes about BitBridge.

The plug-in UI hosted by BitBridge always stay on top.

The standard header is dockable, the 32bit UIs are not.

I almost exclusively use JBridge over BitBridge nowadays, for a couple of reasons:

1. You have far more options for compatibility issues
2. The Upsample options for render/playback become available again, just like they are for 64 bit plugins.

For the most part, I just check the JBridge option within Cakewalk's plugin manager rather than creating a wrapper using the JBridge GUI.

This is because going the JBridge GUI creates a new VST id for the 64 bit wrapper which is different from the original VST. Using the check option within Cakewalk's plugin manager preserves the original VST id, so your existing projects will find your plugins without issue.
