How to save the Cakewalk.exe file
They might fix this later but for this version it would seem the Assistant deletes the cakewalk.exe file after it installs it. A few of us found this little detail very annoying. If you have limited internet bandwith or like in my case, internet that can drop out randomly it is nice to have the option of transferring downloaded installers from one computer to another. Here's how you can save the Cakewalk.exe file before it's deleted. Install and Log on to the Assistant. it should be version 3.0.8 Go to here It will be empty at first. Now click the "install" button on the Assistant. It will show Downloading. For me it took 7 minutes and it then changed to "installing" and a dialog box opens to continue. DO NOT click on it. Yet, AT THIS POINT copy and paste the "cakewalk.exe" file to a new location , USB stick etc. Now you can take that file to your other computer to install. Note that if you had chosen other options to download, like Drum Replacer, this will also show up in this same folder and you can copy those as well. Note May 9th: I posted this below. I transferred the files to a fresh computer and had no problem installing Cakelab. It will go into DEMO mode. You will need to then install the Assistant and log on to authorize Cakelab. But this will use very little bandwith if you saved and copied the assitant.exe file too..

where does it download the exe? I have checked download folder in windows (my nromal) and also in the bandlab asst directory. Nothing? As I said already, I have NO download folder in BL asst dir? I mean if you created it then I should still see the exe somewhere in the directory?

I was just doing right click on Bandlab asst shortcut, properties and open file location. I know about hidden folders but I thought I was in the right folder. Thanks very much

Rough start to these initial renditions of BandLab Assistant’ if you ask me. Almost like no one at BandLab had ever heard of any type of download assistant program before, despite the fact that they are all over the place. I appreciate Catus’ work in tracking down the disposition of the exe file. This will definitely help me save some gb’s in downloads over time.

could be an option to "remove files after install" then you could keep them, or have them deleted from a tiny ssd

So Frank, did you find the folder? I was thinking you might have opened the other folder a I pointed out above there are 2 of them. One contains the assistant installer : C:\Users\Cactus\AppData\Roaming\BandLab Assistant The one you want will contain the Cakewalk and other content files; C:\Users\Cactus\AppData\Roaming\bandlab-assistant\Downloads I forgot my portable HD at work last night so didn't have a chance to try it but I see no reason why it would not work.

here is a generic way to refer to the download path %appdata%\bandlab-assistant\Downloads As long as CbB has been activated, there should be no problem running the update from the command line.

I would far rather know where the CbB exe folders and registry hives get installed. Then I could just copy all from my laptop to my studio machine.

Unless there is an existing activated CbB on the studio machine copying the files from laptop to the studio machine will result in CbB running in demo mode. IOW, there is no legitimate way to get an activated CbB install without running BA to perform the initial install. running and the user logged in.

Does anyone know why this is?

OK, the activation requirement is one thing - I get that. A simple exchange of a few bits of info. Its the requirement that the download be conducted on the DAW that I don't get. Those of us without good Internet connections are left out.

yes, that i don't understand, but maybe it's just the "first version" until they sort stuff out (offline activation, etc)

Exactly We are a minority? not sure. In this world of everyone expecting to be connected 24/7 no matter where you are we've a long way to go. And then then some are warning us that Cell towers are slowly baking everyone who lives near them so do we really want more of that?? I'd say that in BC only the few major cities are covered by both broadband internet and cell service. The rest of us use Satellite. In the interior we all share one gateway in Alberta. That is my problem in a nutshell. Bottleneck. I live not far from a major Highway that crosses from west to east and about 70% of it has no cell coverage.

I'm left out as well, and definitely not happy about it. My house is completely offline except our phones. When I asked Noel about the possibility of offline activation, he said he didn't know. He said it would take quite a bit to get the infrastructure set up that's required for offline authorization. At least we still have Splat, that is until they shut down the servers.....

Yes two things need to happen, 1-Upgrade the assistant so it has download management. 2-Offline Activation like Sonar used.

I may have stumbled on something but the only way I can verify will be to try on a computer that has no trace of Bandlab on it. I realized that I did not have to log on to the assistant when I finally got around to installing CbB. I just verified this on my old laptop at work. I unintalled CbB. Was logged out of the Assistant Installed CbB from the file which is still in the download folder. It never got deleted because of what I did to copy it as posted above. So it installed and shows as legal. We've been told you have to use the assistant to install. This shows otherwise. Now I'm even wondering if this will work on a computer that has never seen the assistant at all? I would think you'd be in demo mode.

Cactus Music I unintalled CbB.
Not sure how this was done. It is likely the uninstall did not remove everything added to the PC by the install and activation processes. FWIW, I am pretty sure BA v3.0.8 does not have to install CbB but is still necessary for activation. Just like the old Cakewalk Command Center.

Yes this is it, I certainly was not about to go further. That might put older versions at risk. Both the machines had CbB installed. So the serial # is probably stashed in the registry somewhere. Later I will see what happens on my office machine that has only Splat installed. This makes it possible for people with pour internet to do a mostly offline activation. Very little internet would be required this way.

It was as I expected. No problem installing Cakelab to a fresh computer. But as expected, It goes to demo mode. I tells you to run the Bandlab Assistant to rectify. As I also had saved the Assistant.exe I didn't have to download that either. Just installed it and logged in. When it first opened ( the App tab) it flashed the "install" for a brief sec then changed to Run. Cakelab now shows as Legal. Same serial # as my other 3 installs. I would guess this took about 5-10 KB of bandwidth. Of course does not help those with zero internet, but really, these days any computer without some sort of connection is next to useless. I myself would only own laptops if that was my situation. And believe me I totally get it as I lived with dial up for 10 years! But Satellite internet is available most everywhere, only barrier is the $60- $100 per month.
