Anybody Install Slate VMR Just to Use a Freebie Module?

Just came across an intriguing Slate module called Revival (it was used in the latest Groove 3 Bob Horn and Erik Reichers Mix Review series).  Turns out Revival is a freebie (but does require an iLok2).  I have not tried to install it yet.  I appears that one must install the Slate VMR framework in which to run Revival.

Anybody tried this?  Is this a rabbit hole down which I don't want to venture?  Or is it the path to a useful freebie (even though there's zero chance I'll later opt to buy into the Slate universe of mixing software)?

Revival is one of the modules I tend use on a regular basis from VMR. Trimmer and The Monster freebies are good as well. They are perfectly good modules. Whether you need them is up to you.

Yes, I use Revival quite a bit. I have The Monster too but don't use it as much. Haven't been coaxed into buying any more...yet!

Kuusniemi, I hadn't seen Trimmer before. I'll have to check that out. What does it do?

If you sign up slate for a month, they said they'll send you a free Ilok.
Does anyone know if the Ilok they send is an Ilok2?

I was thinking about trying it, but I'd like to be able to use their freebies
with an Ilok2 if I cancel after a month.

    Thank you!
I'm definitely going to get it now! I'm just going to finish composing and recording a song first.

It's basically a volume knob, but it's very useful within VMR.

Just to clarify my question in the original post: is there any downside to installing the VMR rack if you only intend to ever use it with a single freebie module?  For example, I have a number of Waves plug-ins, but I would not want the hassle of supporting the Waves infrastructure if it meant I was doing so just to use a single Waves freebie processor.  Does the Slate infrastructure, if there even is one beyond the iLok authorization, present any hassles not normally found with a basic VST plug-in?

Not really. You get to choose which modules you install. Other than it just a normal plugin system, nothing close to Waves.

I'll chime in - I subscribe to the everything bundle.  Pretty sweet deal considering 1 year's worth of everything for less than the price of 1 Izotope plug, or McDsp, or UAD, etc.

The biggest gripe I have with it is that upon first loading in a newly loaded project, it takes a good 20 sec for the plug to load with all the modules.  But, after that first instance, any other instances load right away.  The problem I have is that I believe VMR is the cause of slow loading of projects.  I haven't had the chance to validate this, though.  Could it be the iLok?  I dunno, it was like this on my old computer, and it's like that on a brand new one.

So, if you're only getting this for one of the dozens of modules....it may be a hassle for you.

Revival is great, the Air eqs are really nice at times.  And although the initial load is slow, once up they don't bite the cpu too hard.  Lately I've been tracking with the preamp emulations with pretty good results.  I haven't really used the comps a lot because I have my goto's already.
