How do I keep my Patch Events in the Event List?
Hi, I insert Bank/Patch events directly into each track instead of using the dropdowns in the track properties. But I bought a new PC recently and had to re-install X3 and now each Bank/Patch event is GONE from the events pane - but shows up in the track properties instead. NOT what I want. Isn’t there a change I can make to the cakewalk.ini file to force it to leave my patch events alone? Thanks, Jeff Attachment(s) image001.png image002.png

Not sure I am understanding.
Are you saying that when you load a previous project that had MIDI tracks that contained patch change events in the MIDI track itself, that those patch change events are now not present?
That's really strange. I have inserted patch change events in MIDI tracks in Cakewalk programs for years (from CPA9 to Cakewalk by Bandlab - including X3) and I have never encountered disappearing patch change events.
Even if i load a MIDI file directly, all of my patch change events are always present.

"Are you saying that when you load a previous project that had MIDI tracks that contained patch change events in the MIDI track itself, that those patch change events are now not present?" That is correct. Something strangely moves them from events in the track to a track parameter. I actually solved this years ago by emailing support@cakewalk.com (too bad that's no longer possible grrr) and I think Craig Anderton responded with a tweak to the config file. I can't find the email obviously. Once I get home I'll check if "Patch Changes" is checked in Preferences->MIDI->Playback and Recording? I'll try comparing my old ini files as well. Thanks Guys!

If you are on a 64bit OS, can you try installing Cakewalk by Bandlab to see if the same issue occurs there as well. If you can install Cakewalk by Bandlab, you should do so as Cakewalk by Bandlab blows X3 out of the water.
As a test, I created a small project with a MIDI track in Cakewalk by Bandlab. I placed two patch change events in the MIDI track itself. I then saved the small project and then reopened. The patch change events remained in the track itself and did not transfer to the track parameters.
Maybe have a look in your ini files to see if there is something in there doing this. Located here

Patch changes have never shown on the Events list as far as I can tell. It was a thing that drove me nuts at first as I came from Dr T where the event list showed all events. So if this is what your trying to do, I recommend forgetting about using the event list for patch changes and using the dialog boxes supplied. If you need to change patches mid song on a track. It all works best to have a separate track for each instrument.

I have created patch changes in the event list for many years (X1, X2, X3, Platinum and CbB). You need go to View in the Event Editor and make sure Program Change is selected. You can also do bank changes in the Event Editor as well. The confusion may be when you use the Bank/Program drop downs on the Midi Track, I don't think they are shown in the Event List. I've never used the Midi Track drop downs myself, as they only allow a single bank/program for the entire track, and I usually use multiple programs on a track.

I use patch changes events to change patches on MIDI tracks all the time. They definitely do appear on the Events list. As far as I'm aware, That's the only way to modify them if needed. By default they appear brown.

Any patch change right at the start (time=00:00:00:00) turns up as a track parameter, and not in the event list. Any patch change at a later time turns up in the event list. I don't know how to make the time zero patch change appear in the event list. Cheers, Peter.

Adding to my previous post, you can insert a patch change event at 00:00:00:00 using the event list and it will stay visible. I guess there is a subtle difference between a patch/bank setting as a track parameter, and a patch/bank event associated with a specific time (even zero).

If the GM Setup Measure option is active, some MIDI setup events at the start of tracks are moved to the corresponding inspector controls and hidden in the Event List when a GM MIDI file is opened. This behaviour can be disabled by adding the option "GeneralMidiSMFs=0" into TTSSEQ.INI. But I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen not only with GM MIDI files but also when Cakewalk project files are reopened, so there might be something else going on in the OP's case.

For me the PG. does not ever show on the event list , both from downloaded GM files and for all my 100's of files I made myself on an Atari. I can see buy answers here that it is possible but for me, it has never worked.

So all of your 100s of songs each have only one patch? You can't change to another sound in the middle of a song (like for a solo or something)?! I'm shaking my head here. Maybe that's not something you need, and that's fine. I'm just thinking maybe you have bank patch events filtered out on the event list. Also, btw, this problem ONLY happens when I convert Cakewalk project files to MIDI1 files. If I could load cakewalk project files into https://www.showplay.com/ I wouldn't have to worry about this issue.

OK, time for a quick happy dance. Turns out the GeneralMidiSMFs property doesn't work if you put spaces around the equals sign. Doh!! GeneralMidiSMFs = 0 It has to be in the options section and it has to be GeneralMidiSMFs=0 Thank you KAV!
