Any word on ARA2?
Wondering if anyone has heard if Cakewalk by Bandlab will be implementing ARA2 protocols any time soon? I use Melodyne Studio a lot and I prefer not to render down my Melodyne tracks so I can go back and tweak them later. I am hoping there will not be issues with backward compatibility once ARA2 is implemented. Thoughts?

I haven't heard anything about ARA 2.0. If this is something a large majority of users will use then It stands to reason it's probably only a matter of time. Even though there has been an acquisition and we are seeing regular updates my feeling is that some things are still in the jelling stage with respect to organization and direction. Unlike established daw companies that have had no major disrupts and keep on with business as usual, Cakewalk has seen some major changes with some changes still likely underway. Once the machine is better oiled I think we will see more of these kinds of things. That we have had regular updates at all is amazing to me given the kind of major shake up/transition we have recently seen with Cakewalk. My advice would be to "hang in there" for a bit yet.

You cannot get an answer to this, only speculation, so is better to just wait and see. To my knowledge, Celemony has not released an ARA2 version of Melodyne yet ( Celemony had predicted "spring"). Although S14 has ARA2 implemented (with some goodies already in place), it is still not "complete" without an ARA2 Melodyne version on the streets. No one can predict how any DAW will behave at this point.

That is some good info Mettelus. I was under the impression that Melodyne Studio was already ARA 2 so that cleared that up a lot for me. There are certainly some really big things on the horizon. I hope I can afford the upgrade price when the next Melodyne studio comes out.

I have put in a request to Celemony for color blobs, let's see if they come through with that request. It would be a lot easier working with multiple tracks when each track would have its own color. I would upgrade for that feature alone.

The guys over on the Reaper forums say that the implementation is there and ready to go, but the hold-up seems to be with another rather large and popular DAW that is still having issues with things. They would not name this DAW but one doesn't have to be a Pro to guess which Tools may be causing the hold-up. (OK I don't really know if it's Pro Tools, but I couldn't resist the jab).

LOL, good jab, nonetheless :) The only three mentioned in Celemony's post above are Studio One (already released), REAPER (appears ready to go), and Logic Pro (status unknown); but Melodyne (5?) is also MIA. Studio One 4 not only released but has some aspects of ARA2 embedded into it (e.g., the chord track), so I am not sure if that is a partnership thing, or if REAPER may actually be waiting for Melodyne (5?) to hit the streets.

I think it is safe to presume that Steinberg is not eager to implement ARA in any form -- classic "not invented here." So the guess of ProTools makes sense. I think this will all change one Celemony puts out a new version of Melodyne, assuming there are some real advantages with ARA2.
