Nice.  Has a bit of Jeff Lynne production vibe. Thanks for sharing.

Funny you should say that because it's my nod to the Travelling Wilbury's "Handle With Care", something you also might see written on a box along with "This Way Up". :)

I listened to the free preview of This Way Up...sounds nicely played and captured. You've gone a for a big reverb sound on this track. Is that something you fancy or felt it was good for this particular track?

How about posting it somewhere that doesn't require signing up for anything in order to listen? Like SoundCloud,  SoundClick or ReverbNation? After those comparisons to the Travelling Wilburys and Jeff Lynne I am very interested in hearing it, but I want neither iTunes on my computer nor an account on Spotify.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I had no master-plan, I just keep fiddling about with the sound until I think it sounds right. It's on Soundcloud now if you want to hear the full track:

You've got a cool song here and I liked your vocals.  The mix sounds 80's to me, but there's nothing wrong with that.  Well done.

Huge sound and very likable. Would appeal to a broad audience I think and that's a good thing.

Pretty cool job! The vocal arrangements are very hooky. Lead vocal is a really good performance . . .
I would agree that your mix is something from the past. It's perfectly good as it is, but as a listener, I was absolutely swamped by the chorus and panning and layers of smoosh on those background vocals. Honestly I couldn't make out the supporting bg vocal lyrics, it all went by in a whoosh. But the whoosh was like an instrument in itself and was not unpleasant.

I wish I could be more constructive on your bgv's, I struggle with them greatly myself. To me they just dominated this mix and I'm not sure to best effect. They get kind of poltergeisty . . . is that a word?

It has that huge sound and the ELO / Moody Blues comparison is pretty good! And I'd add, your voice has a Joe Walsh quality in spots. All to the good!

thanks for making the Soundcloud thing happen . . .

cheers,
-Tom

Re: My First Complete SONAR Project 2018/08/16 15:41:31 (permalink)
Thanks for all of your comments on "This Way Up". I'm so glad it has been received positively.

With reference to the apparent 80s sound, I'm 58 years old so that's entirely possible but not deliberate. With reference to the "whoosh" of backing vocals, I used a flange effect on them after watching a documentary on how Alan Parsons processed the backing vocals on Pink Floyd's "Time". I'm not so sure I understand the problem with hearing what's being sung – the backing vocals consist of lots of "ahhh"s, the rest of them following the lead vocal in terms of lyrics apart from "would I tell a lie to you" in the second verse. I hope that's cleared up any mystery.

Once again, thank you all for taking the time and trouble to listen, your comments are much appreciated.

Late to the party...   nice track!   I really enjoyed the retro vibe and the vocals were a standout.  I also kinda liked the flangey BGVs - cool touch.
